Fall, fundraisers, and community

I was just thinking about all of the events that are lined up for us throughout the year.  Our church and Catholic school is very much intertwined as one, so any type of fundraiser becomes a huge group effort, even to those who no longer have children in the school.

Besides bringing basket items and baked good/appetizers for our Bazaar and Show Boat events, I love to help out in the kitchen.  I am officially a life-time member of the "apple salad team".  This consists of one man who uses a gadget to core/slice the apples, while a bunch of us ladies peel and chop them.  Then goes in the celery, nuts, and mayo-dressing, and large bowls of this are placed on the tables during our Bazaar lunch.  My fingers are so sore after doing this!

And usually before Thanksgiving, there is a large pie event.  Last year, we got together at the school cafeteria and made many, many fruit pies from scratch.  These are frozen and sold as a fundraiser for about $10 each.  Since this is before the Thanksgiving rush, we literally sell OUT.  I am really looking forward to helping with this again this year, probably within a month or so.  It is just a really great, fun time to get together and accomplish something.  And though I tend to be the youngest one, it has helped me to meet people and feel like part of the community.  It has also taught me that there is no shame in wearing an apron... even if mine does say "BAM!" across the front of it ;-)

This weather we have been having in the Midwest has Fall on my mind, so I guess that is why I am thinking of this stuff.  It is my favorite time of the year.  With the cooler temperatures, there is just a Fall feel to the air.  I am ready to go to the pumpkin patch, freeze apple pie filling, and enjoy bonfires and chili on the cool nights.  Do any of you all have events or traditions that you are looking forward to in the fast-approaching Fall season?

I love autumn! It's the cooling air, and beautiful colors,  and the wonderful smells.  Sounds like you are fortunate in your town that you can still sell baked goods for fundraising.  When my oldest was at the private school, I was the young Momma - they had a Christmas bazaar, I made children's clothing items.  I remember one year I was up all night the night before, finishing up on some of the garments! I love wearing an apron - sometimes I'll wear one, so I'm in my "uniform" it helps me keep on task.

Oh wow! I also wear aprons. My Grandma used to make them as Christmas gifts, and I have several of those. I made little ones for my kids(boys and a girl) as well. It never has made sense to me why they went out of style..so many household chores dirty-up your clothes. I guess "Vogue" doesn't call them stylish. Oh give them time, some "yuppy" will say aprons are "in" and make a million bucks! Seems like common sense to me, not to mess up your clothes. I guess we are too old-fashioned, but I like it that way. How about you?Wink

Re: Fall, fundraisers, and community

Both of my grandmothers wore aprons.  Even though they both have been done for 37 years, I can see them....lots of pockets, one for a tissue, one for some hard candy and when they were in the garden they made great "baskets".  Just pull up the bottom and make a basket for gathering eggs, veggies.  Great memories.

I think aprons went "out of style" or stopped being used as clothes washing became easier and quicker.

Re: Fall, fundraisers, and community

My husband is from a family of 9 kids. Every fall, on the third weekend in October, there is a huge Fall Festival of Leaves held in the tiny town of Bainbridge, OH. My SIL lives there in the hills of Bainbridge on about 8 acres, and has any of the family that can make it, come down that weekend for a family get together and bonfire. Everyone contributes their food specialty, and we eat all day long while chatting and visiting around the bonfire. It is always a good time, no matter if it's raining, snowing, cold or hot. Looking forward to it again this fall!

That sounds like a lot of fun!  There is nothing better than bonfire weather, I don't think... unless it is bonfire food!  I am thinking of having a fall/early halloween party this year.  My SIL used to do that in the community they lived in, and would have a potluck and get pumpkins for the young kids to paint on.
