The Duggar's in Amish Country

Has anyone else seen the previews for the Duggar's TV show on TLC? Last night they showed them going to Amish Country. I'm guessing they are going to PA. The show is to air next Tuesday..."The Duggars are on their way to Capitol Hill! Watch as the family begins their trip to Washington, DC, complete with a stop in Amish country." It's on at 9pm Eastern.

Re: The Duggar's in Amish Country

I saw the Duggar's in Amish Country last night, I had DVR'd it from a week ago. A very nice presentation with the Amish/Mennonite family they visited. You should enjoy it.

Re: The Duggar's in Amish Country

I`m not sure about the sanity of the Duggars, but they have the most respectful, considerate, well manered children I have ever seen. Seems to me we could all take lessons from them on raising children.

Re: The Duggar's in Amish Country

Welcome Greenfarmerboy and I absolutely agree with you...although Lovina's children would give them a run for their money....They truly are a well-behaved bunch!

Re: The Duggar's in Amish Country

I gotta say that the Duggers, while interesting, really bother me. Having that number of kids while fully participating in the world's consumer culture, seems irresponsible. If the Dugger family lived like Lovina, I wouldn't feel that way; the Amish seem to hold themselves as stewards of the land. Many farm, can, make their family's clothing. Not the Duggers, they go on jaunts to Dollywood, NYC, etc. They live in a beautiful, modern home. They consume...a lot. Does this make any sense to y'all or am I out in left field?

Re: The Duggar's in Amish Country

The Dugger's may very well garden and can some of their food, I have not seen on TV that they do not.  Michelle used to make clothes for the children, she may still.  At least they are buying used.  As far as the travel jaunts, I'll bet those are set up by the TV show directors to ensure an interesting show i.e lots of viewers.  They built their own home from the ground up.  It looks large - but look at how many are living there!  Plenty of people with 3 or 4 person families live in extravently large homes - a separate large bedroom for each child, a living room, a den, a family room, a media room, etc.  The Duggar's home seems appropriate for the number of people living there (mom, dad, 17 children - Josh now has his own home, and grandma).  I don't see that the Duggers are heavy consumers per person.

Re: The Duggar's in Amish Country

I will respond to this - Not all large families are Amish, LDS and Catholic!  Many of us Christians believe that Children are an heritage from the Lord, so we've allowed God to determine the number of children we will have in our family.  Not all Christian couple who believe and follow the scriptures have super large families, most are probalby in the 5-7 range.  We aren't Amish and are out in the communties we live in, living.  Most of us live in very modest housing, some of us do sew some of our clothing, some prefer thrift stores and others might shop for clothing at a WalMart or Target.  Most of us go on vacations to normal vacation destinations like Disneyland, the Mall of America, American Girl Place, Family Bible Camp or Yellowstone etc.  And a good many homeschool. Our children participate in sports, dance and music just like any other children with children from the community. This does not indicate an ere of eccentricity.

Are we consumers? Yes! Do we aspire to be the stewards of the property (which is different for each family) the Lord has blessed us with, the way the Lord wishes? Yes!

So if the Duggar family was Amish, it would be OK to have a large number of children, since they are just Christians, they are irresponsible?  Being Amish does not a responsible person make!

Yes, my honest feeling is your thoughts are a little out in left field.

Re: The Duggar's in Amish Country

I'm sorry you think I'm in left field.  What I think you missed in my post is that most Amish folks choose to live as our past generations did---which is a lot gentler on the earth.  I'm afraid that if folks who live the modern life with all its "stuff" have large families, this earth won't be inhabitable (at least not pleasantly) in another generation or two.  Not trying to offend you or anyone else who has chosen to have children.

Re: The Duggar's in Amish Country

Don't forget about the people on the other side of the argument, who think we farmers are "the devil".  They complain about "monoculture" and intensive farming, not to mention "cruelty" to animals.

Besides, Amish being human, I bet they are just as consumeristic as the rest of us.  It's just for other things, like tractors, balers, fabric, etc.

With regards to the trips and things the Duggars have.  I think you meglett44 might be missing.  I bet all that stuff has been provided free by the sponsors.  Just think how many people have decided to go to Dollywood since that episode!  It's advertising gold to have a family like the Duggars use/attend their products/events.  Michelle would be crazy not to use free stuff and take advantage of free travel for the kids.  Travel is a great educator.

Re: The Duggar's in Amish Country

Simply,AMEN! I totally agree!

Re: The Duggar's in Amish Country

Nope - Didn't miss anything.  So, if we large families, go off the grid then it is OK to have a large family.  It's OK for an Amish couple to have many children, but not OK for and "english" family to have many children because we use to much consumer goods and leave massive amounts of trash. Nope, didn't miss anything.

We once were selling a home that we had outgrown, it was our first home, a two bedroom townhouse, which was actually quite large square footage wise, but not laid out well enough to add a bedroom, so we were selling.  We had a realtor come through for a "preview" for a client, and this is what she told our realtor, "I was actually very surprised with this property, usually a home with a lot of small children is dirty and smells and this one didn't!" Talk about prejudice and stereotyping.

If we Christians stop populating the earth, that's when you need to be concerned!  Thank the Lord that in the next generation there will be some very well trained, Jesus believing folks in charge! You had better hope that some of these well trained homeschool, large familied children ends up in the White House, Congress or the Senate!

We Momma's of many are quite accustomed to the glares and rude comments about population control.  Quite frankly it is not your business, to comment to another on the size of their family, it is between the couple and GOD.  Hope this ends this discussion.

Re: The Duggar's in Amish Country

Yes, I saw the clip. I'm hoping since Michelle has a sister in the Cincinnati area that they are going  or were in Holmes County. Anxious to see it tomorrow night.
