Adams county

Hi all, especially Editor Kevin!  We are going to Adams county for a change of scenery.  We have been to the stores that are in one place, name escapes me but there is a bulk food store, furniture store and bakery on the same property.  We have also been to the market "down the road"  (name also escapes me today).

Is there anything else to check out down there?  I know that area wasn't as commercial as Holmes county.  Thanks!

Re: Adams county

lls847...Sorry!  It is Adams county Ohio.  I will remember to post the state the next time.

Re: Adams county

It would be helpful for those of us in other areas, if the states were mentioned when people ask questions about the different settlements.  I gather from the other comments that Adams County mentioned above is in Ohio?  However, there is an Adams County is a lot of state and some are very close to Amish settlements -- just trying to get a feel for areas I might have missed in my travels.  Thanx, lls

Re: Adams county

Fair point...Yes, Adams County, Ohio...but you are correct, Adams County, Indiana  is only 200 miles or so away from there and is home to the huge Amish settlement near Berne...Not to mention Adams County, Illinois....

Re: Adams county

Thanks, Diann.  I hope it is open.  We've been down to that area twice and we've never stopped there.  Don't know why.   We've had the pretzels and they are yummy.

A couple of years ago we went to the Pumpkin Show in Circleville then followed SR 7 along the river.  We meandered over towards the area and it was a wonderful fall day.  Millers will make sandwiches for you and we bought some other goodies and went up to the picnic area.  The trees were at their peak and it was just breathtaking.

I could live in that area.  My oldest daughter was born in Gallipolis and I've always loved it down in that part of the state as well.

Re: Adams county

We just went to Miller's in Adams County a couple of weeks ago. The bakery is wonderful. I wish we would have know more about the area. But we still had a wonderful time there and the country side was awesome to see.

Re: Adams county

kevin, how far is this settlement if i were to take 275 east. i would be coming from montgomery road by bethesda north hospital, i thank you for your help with this.

Re: Adams county

Thanks for supplying the names! We have been to Millers and Keims before and have passed the variety store.  I love the scenery.  I think Holmes county is great but there is something quaint about Adams county.

Re: Adams county

Cat lover, just a quick word about the variety store in Unity -- it was closed the day we went, and it was during the week, I think on a Thursday, so we missed shopping there. I loved browsing through Keim's and Miller's. The cream horns and pretzels were awesome! A must-have, if you like that sort of thing!

Re: Adams county

If you are looking to spend a day shopping, sampling Amish foods, visiting museums that tell you more about the Amish, you might come away disappointed.  Holmes County is better for that, and is gorgeous.  Adams County is a favorite, favorite destination of mine. I love the Amish settlement there. But, as you accurately say, it is not as touristy. You’ve already mentioned two of the big Amish draws: Miller’s and Keim Family Market. Another neat Amish-run store is Unity Variety at the intersection of Unity Road and Wheat Ridge. As the name implies, they sell a bit of everything. There is also a small Amish-run bird feed store nearby. I could easily spend a weekend in Adams County, but the Amish would only be part of it. I would stay at the wonderful Murphin Ridge Inn, a charming country inn near Miller’s I’d hike in the “Edge of Appalachia” preserve and visit Serpent Mound, an old Indian earthworks.  And I would just explore the tiny country roads that wind through the Amish settlement.  I highly recommend Adams County to anyone, I just want people to have realistic expectations when they go. Let me know if you have any other questions!
