Nobel Prize? for what?

basically, i am a pretty laid back person, but there are some things that really do get me going and this is one of them.  it takes the brightest of the men and women of our country sometimes years in order to even QUALIFY for the Nobel Prize, some in education, medical research, or another outstanding area.  the idea of giving this award to Obama makes me want to throw up!!!  what has he done??  the war is still afghanistan and iraqi, the healthcare in this country is in shambles, people are out of work and losing their homes and jobs.  healthcare for veterans (i am retired after 30 years) in also in peril.  this really bothers me and i hope that all of you who read this site will make some kind of response to this issue of importance to everyone.  i'm sorry if i sounded off and upset anyone, but sometimes we just need to have a say about what is happening.

Re: Nobel Prize? for what?

Just remember who else the award was given to. Yasser Arafat one of the least peaceful people there were. I wouldn't want to be in the same classification as that terrorist.

Re: Nobel Prize? for what?

I said something on another blog about this, we all could be given awards for our good intentions... My Hubby piped up with the cliche that the road to H... is paved with good intentions - I really feel the award has lost its zip; it used to be awarded to people who've really gotten down and done some dirty work, in the trenches, type stuff.  No, he didn't put himself on the list, but I do agree that he could have removed hisself from the list of candidates.  Swisssweetie, is right about the race thing - just cause one "color" shows up more doesn't make one more of that race.

Re: Nobel Prize? for what?

I know...I mean in a perfect world, yes, maybe Obama should have refused it...but, think about it, you're asleep, you get a call at 6 a.m. and your told you've been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize...In the fog of sleep, excitement, honor, I'd probably graciously accept and just hope everyone would be happy for me....I do think, Kjunebug, that you do raise a relevant possibility that the Nobel Prize committee risks "watering down" the significance of the award by making such an unconventional choice...

Re: Nobel Prize? for what?

Personally, I think there were much more worthy candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize and I was shocked when I heard the news.  That said, I do have some problem with right-wing radio ripping into the choice....It's not like Obama chose himself for the award, it was awarded to him by a committee...so I don't know why people are getting mad at Obama. ....It would be like if  I received the "Most Organized Person in the World Award."   Anyone who knows me knows that me receiving such an award would be absurd, but the ire should be directed at those who bestowed the award on me, not on me....make sense?  I guess Obama could have declined to accept...that probably would have been an OK move....

Re: Nobel Prize? for what?

Kevin I agree all the way with you on this matter. Obama wasn't aware of this until the phone call. The changes should come with the committee not the person that received the award.

Re: Nobel Prize? for what?

i was not upset due to the fact that he got the award, i just think he should have declined the offer to receive such a prestigest honor in the first place.  as i said earlier, many very bright men and women have waited possibly a lifetime for this honor, A LIFETIME.  i don't know kevin, this just got to me in the worst way.  in the depression years, there were only TWO presidents who were awarded this honor.  he has NOT paid his dues yet, and it will be awhile before i feel that he should have something of this nature given to him again.  maybe when the healthcare issue is solved, maybe when people are not losing their homes and jobs, maybe when the veteran's of all wars can get good healthcare at the V.A. hospitals in this country. then maybe i'll be able to accept the fact that he gets this honor.

Re: Nobel Prize? for what?

I totally agree!! I cannot, for the life of me, grasp this one. Where's the rhyme or reason? I guess next time we shall have a Nobel prize winner from a tiny town, in a tiny state, with a tiny (if any)job, and they will be as deserving. Anyone want to volunteer? I guess we are all just as able to be nominated!!!

Re: Nobel Prize? for what?

the only other two presidents who DID EARN the Nobel Prize were during the years of the great depression and THEY DID DESERVE that honor.  it seems to me that they gave it to him because he was the 1st. president of color...if i am wrong, than i am sorry....if i am right, than so be it for the way i feel about this whole situation, which i find to be very revolting.  let's try, the next time to give it to someone who has spent years waiting to have the honor presented to him or her.

Re: Nobel Prize? for what?

I think it was awarded prematurely also but I seriously doubt it has anything to do with his being "the first president of color."  And what "color" is he anyway?  His mother is white, his father is black, so he is as white as he is black.  And really, what does that have to do with anything?

Re: Nobel Prize? for what?

Well said, swisssweetie....I don't think race enters into it...if Clarence Thomas were President, I doubt he would have won the Nobel Prize....

Re: Nobel Prize? for what?

could not say it better than you have
