House torn down on the farm where the movie Witness was filmed

Yesterday I spent the day touring the amish countryside of Lancaster county with my brother and sister-in-law.  We stopped at the amish farm where the movie Witness was fimed.  Everything pretty much looks the same as in the movie except we learned that the main house was torn down and the owners are in the process of building a newer, more energy efficient one for them and their 9 children!  :)  The "summer kitchen" where most of the filiming along with the barn and the famous Purple Martin bird house still stands.  We got the priviledge of talking with the present owner.  The family was so nice to allow us just to peek around.  We didnt' ask to go in buildings but just admire the scenery in the yard.  :)  It seems funny how much this amish lady new about the movie having never scene it since the amish are prohibited from watching films.

My mom and I went on the Witness Tour four years ago last August.  It was the 20th Anniversary.  They took us to the house we walked all over the farm, barn, the little house was built just for the movie.  The cabinets didn't open except one door where she kept the coffee can.  They took us to the museum where the clothes are and everything.  The present owner sold cards, jams and jellies, etc.  I have lots of pictures if you would like to see them.

Thanks for sharing this info.  I unfortunately missed the 20th anniversary tour.  I would absolutely love to see photos!

Nicole, thanks for sharing this!  Witness was released in 1985, so next year it will be the 25th anniversary of the movie....I plan a few special retrospectives last year to remember the movie.  Harrison Ford said it best himself "the movie has held up very well" over time....

You are welcome! I consider it a blessing to have talked with the nice new owers of the "Witness" farm.  :)  I also got a chance to meet one of the little girls "Rosanna King" who was a victim of the shooting.  She is an amazing little miracle and has made tremendous progress, however we all need to continue to pray for her and her family.  Her day to day, round the clock care can't be easy.

Miracle is the right word ... Apparently, after being shot through the head, she was sent home to die.  Not only didn't she die, but the fact that she still continues to make progress is truly a blessed miracle.  And what a blessing that you were able to meet her!

That's really neat that you got to visit the home and talk to the present owners.  And thanks for the photo of the new schoolhouse ... it's good to hear that it's in a more protected location and the children feel more secure there. - Janice
