The Amish Cook from Oasis Newsfeatures

Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

We just got back from a camping trip and of course, while in the area, had to make our usual stop at the Country Variety Store in Bellefontaine, Ohio, for some homemade Amish oatmeal cookies. When we were there a couple weeks ago, we thought it was odd that the Amish man and his wife who run the store weren't there, and just the young girls were running it. The gentleman was there this time, and we overheard him telling some customers that he and his wife were out traveling in May when someone hit their buggy, killing their horse and badly injuring he and his wife. He said they life-flighted his wife to the hospital where she suffered a broken pelvis and he a broken jaw and lots of scratches, bumps and bruises. His wife is home now and in a wheelchair. Amazing that they survived!

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

How awesome that I found this site.  I love reading Lovina's stories.  I use to live in Pleasant Hill Ohio and now am out in Arizona.  I read my Troy Daily News to keep in touch with whats going on "back home"  I know exactly where that campground is at Indian Lake, my ex mother in law lives there and I and my family had spent many many times up there.  This is so exciting for me to read the posts from everyone.  This has just made my day!

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

Well, welcome Deb....I know - and I know others around here know - the Pleasant Hill area well, although I always want to confuse it with an even tinier town called Rose Hill over on Ohio 49.  Hope all is well in Arizona!

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

Well  considering we have been well above normal temps...its nothing for us to have seen 113-115 degrees in the last several weeks....right now it is going on 8pm and is 102, but slowly but surley the temps are coming down and now only around 105 during the day.  We are in our monsoon season and the humidity has been up, nothing quite like I remember in Ohio but even a little bit here is miserable...BUT the winters are so worth the heat in the summer.....I loved the fall back home...I do miss the beautiful colors of the leaves.

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

Thanks, I was wondering if it was a public or private campground.

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

Joyce, we camp at the state campground at Indian Lake, right on St. Rt. 235. It's not too far from Bellefontaine.

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

Diann, Where do you go camping near Bellfontaine?  We bought a trailer and are looking for different places to camp.

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

Joyce, be sure to stop by the bakery in the back of the store. They have the best cookies, if you are into sweets!

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

Joyce, I don't know the names of the couple who own the store, but they are elderly. I have to laugh - he will not let anyone in the store wearing a tank or halter top, and he keeps a shirt inside the door he makes them wear if they are not dressed appropriately. Bet he loses some business that way. I always make sure I am dressed/covered well, when we go up there. He's great at giving "sermons" to those who don't, and I don't want any!  Laughing

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

Diann, that is funny!! I have never been to a place like that, although I imagine some would  act that way. Whenever I know I am going to an Amish establishment I dress modestly. I usually do anyhow, but I do wear shorts and pants. I never wanted to offend the people that were in the shops, etc., so I try hard to "fit in" with their beliefs. I would suspect that dealing with the public(that buy their goods), that they would be used to "English" dress. If they want "English" money, I guess they oughta turn the other cheek...ummm, look the other way. If the dress offends, so should the money that the wearer is spending! I bet that any vendor, Amish or not, would take a person's money.

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

They must be the third owners then because the second owners were a youngish couple.  We'll be that way later in the month taking our children to YMCA camp in Bellfontaine so maybe I'll ask for a little detour while we are up that way.

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

We used to visit the store more often when it was owned by the original owner.  He then sold it to a couple from the outside who were joining church.  Is that the couple, or was it sold again?  Been a few years since I've made it up there.  I always liked to go to Coblentz Fabric too, when I was up there.  Yoder Furniture was nice too.  Hmm made me want to schedule a trip that way soon!

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

That's terrible, I'm glad they are recovering.

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

We probably won't be going back up till Sept. I can't take the heat or the crowds at the campground in summer! It's so much nicer when it starts cooling down and the kiddies are back in school!  Smile

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

As we have read recently about all of the other car/buggy mishaps, the fact that they are alive is a miracle. I will keep both of them in my prayers and thoughts. Thanks for sharing this with us, Diann. Are you going back anytime soon? Please let us how they are doing.

Re: Amish in Bellefontaine, Ohio

I live about 15 minutes from that store and shop there quite a bit.  I am glad that the owners are doing well.  Car/buggy crashes in our area are happening more often.  There have been several.
