Favorite Christmas Cookie?

If you could only make one kind of Christmas cookie, what would it be?

Re: Favorite Christmas Cookie?

I do believe that is the recipe!  I never knew the correct name mom just always called them "goodie cookies".  Thanks for the recipe.

Re: Favorite Christmas Cookie?

Russian tea cakes are a time honored tradition in my family, my mom would make dozens of them, only she used pecans instead of walnuts, now my sister and I make many many of them....My mom also made a great fudge every year, we still make it now, it's made from jello dark chocolate pudding, and it is the bestest fudge in the whole world, I have given the recipe to many of my friends and they fell in love with it and now make it every year also....My mom also made toffee, fruitcake, mincemeat cookies, lemon dream bars, rum balls and raisin filled sour cream cookies, it wouldn't be Christmas without all these goodies!!!

Re: Favorite Christmas Cookie?

Cheryl, my mom would use English walnuts in her Russian tea cake cookies. I used regular old walnuts one time -- they just weren't the same!

Re: Favorite Christmas Cookie?

My mom and my grandmother used to make a small round coookie which they called "goodie cookies".  They had walnuts in them and the dough was rolled in powdered sugar.  I loved them so much.  You don't have to make them at Christmas but that is when we would usually have them.  My mom died nine years ago today and I wish she were around to make them once again.

This isn't a cookie but every year she would also make fudge from a recipe on the back of a Hershey's cocoa box.  When she died my daughters were helping me clean and they threw away a box they thought was junk but it had some of mom's recipes in it.  Recently at a flea market in Urbana OH, I found the cocoa tin that had the recipe.  I didn't want to pay the price they had for the tin (didn't have the cash at the time) but the vendors were gracious enough to let me copy the recipe down after I told them what it meant to me.

Re: Favorite Christmas Cookie?

Cat lover, I wonder if this is the cookie your mom made?  My mom also made them, and they were called RussianTeacakes....http://www.northpole.com/kitchen/cookbook/rec0714.asp Sound similar?

Re: Favorite Christmas Cookie?

My favourites are Moravian cookies (like a gingersnap kinda) and zimsterne.  Mom's favourite is my shortbread (really my g. grandma's recipe).  We make so many cookies for the holiday season.

Re: Favorite Christmas Cookie?

Gingerbread boys, hands down!! But sugar cookiies come in a very close second. My hubby's sister always wants my sugar cookies..although I have given her my recipe. She says she just can't get them right. She has teen daughters and they're the ones that live in Lancaster county(PA). Funny,I'd think with all of her Amish neighbors(she has MANY), that she could find cookies!!

Re: Favorite Christmas Cookie?

My 2 favorites are almond crescents & anise drops.   My mother used to make both.   The anise need to have their 'caps' dried overnight, which means there must be a pet/mouse free room where one can put the entire batch of cookies before baking them the next day.   Lost both recipes, but there is a Christmas cookie recipe thing that goes around on the net every year, which has the anise-----not sure about the crescents.  She also used to make molasses cookies.   These were all as small as the 'spritz' ones she made.   Love the molasses any time of year!   C.

Here is the cookie recipe page that I received... hope it's of some help to you all.....http://www.northpole.com/Kitchen/Cookbook/cat0001.asp

Re: Favorite Christmas Cookie?

Haven't heard from you in ages, Carol...hope all is well!

Re: Favorite Christmas Cookie?

I'd have to say butter cookies. My mom used to bake them every year, and they were the greatest! Sure wish she was still able to make them. But my daughter makes them every year now, and they are just about as good as Mom's! I always had trouble with mine.

Re: Favorite Christmas Cookie?

Great question swisssweetie!  I'd have to say "Aunt Sarah Cookies".  They are a family favorite.  Basic sugar cookie but they have sour cream in them and are very good.  My family wouldn't have Christmas without them.  They are perfect for decorating and kids of all ages can get in on the fun. Wink

Re: Favorite Christmas Cookie?

That reminds me...a friend gave me her family's special sugar cookie recipe one time but when I went to make it, she'd left out the amount of sugar.  I think it was a case of not REALLY wanting to share a family recipe or else she was just setting me up to fail.  I pried it out of her eventually Smile
