The Amish Cook from Oasis Newsfeatures

Editor Kevin and anyone else interested...

Recently a family near me lost a barn during a horrible storm.  The barn burned to the ground and smoldered for several days.  If you would like to see pictures of the barn raising go to WKTN.com and you can find the pictures of the new barn going up on the community links page.

Revisiting the Bologna Recipe

We were delightfully entertained with an impromptu lunch recently when we visited our Amish friends in Clare, MI.  Ida Mae had just finished canning bologna.  She willingly shared the recipe she used after we were treated to that and fruit pizza for lunch.  Oh, my that was good.  I want to can some to take with us to the Family Farm days coming up next week in Holmes County.  I'm looking for a little more information and maybe different seasoning.  I tried the link, from discussion in 2008 but it doesn't work. Is it possible to get the recipe Lovina used? thanks.

Re: Editor Kevin and anyone else interested...

When I lost my husband, a friend told me this:  When you lose someone, it leaves a hole in your life.  For many people, the way of coping with that loss (that hole) is to try to ignore it, much as you turn your head when you walk by an ugly place.  Instead, the friend said, take all those wonderful memories of the loved and lost one and "plant" them in that hole, just as you would plant flowers in an ugly spot.  Make that hole a place you visit to smile, laugh, cry, and remember all the fun, wonderful time you had with the person.  It's been 9+ years, and you know what...the advice works.  I don't dwell on my loss, I dwell on our wonderful time together.

Re: Editor Kevin and anyone else interested...

Thanks you agtoth, that is wonderful advice! It was an incredibly hard day to get through today -- we held Mom's funeral this morning. I had thought I would hold up better than I did, guess it didn't fully hit me till the funeral mass, when I dissolved into shaking and tears. With God's help and the wonderful, caring friends from this web site, I will get through this! Thank you all so much for your prayers, encouragement and advice. I appreciate it so very much!

Re: Editor Kevin and anyone else interested...

Diann, Was sorry to hear about your mom's passing. I read her obituary and the priest that married my husband and I, 39 years ago,  was named Fr. Kenneth Baker, St. Ann's Parish in Hamilton, OH. I had heard that he was in OH somewhere, just curious if he is the same one. Take care, lost my mom almost 51 years ago, I had just turned 15. I know the feeling of loss.  Margie

Re: Editor Kevin and anyone else interested...

Hi Margie, I don't know what parish Father Baker came from. St. Paul's was my parent's home church - I don't go there, but he could well be the same priest who married you.

Re: Editor Kevin and anyone else interested...

It is awesome how they all come together to help each other out in time of need!

Re: Editor Kevin and anyone else interested...

Hope you are doing well, Diann.

Re: Editor Kevin and anyone else interested...

Thanks Cat lover. I'm doing as well as expected, under the circumstances.

Diann,   I am so sorry for the loss of your Mother.  Ladine

Re: Editor Kevin and anyone else interested...

I read the obituary.  Your mother was a beautiful lady.  I lost my mom 10 years ago but there isn't a day go by that I don't think of her.  It gets better but the loss never goes away.  My heart goes out to the families who deal with dementia or altzheimers.  That has to be tough.

Re: Editor Kevin and anyone else interested...

Thank you Cat lover.  Yes, she was a gorgeous lady!
