Nervy or Nice???

Something just so incredibly funny just happened that I HAVE to share it with someone!!!

We live in a fairly small manufacturing/farming town here in Iowa.  My neighborhood is pretty nice and quiet, and we live on a cul-de-sac that has 6 houses on it.  I went outside to check on my daughter, and I saw my elderly neighbor's twin sister parked in front of my next-door neighbor's mailbox.  She had a piece of something in her hand that looked like sandpaper, and she was rubbing at the top of the mailbox.  After a minute or so, she got in her car and drove two houses down, to her sister's house.

I found it peculiar that this lady would be messing with my neighbor's mailbox at all.  The owner of the mailbox is the dietician for our Hyvee grocery store...and this reminded me that I needed to give her a call on some business.  While I was talking to her, I HAD to mention the odd mailbox-sanding incident.  She found it so very weird and peculiar also!  Although her mailbox pole is black and rather modern, the box itself is silver.  I jokingly told her that when she comes home, she might find that her mailbox has been painted for her!

Well, I just went out to get my mail and nearly choked!!  Indeed, the mailbox is now painted black!!!  LMAO...what I want to know is WHO does that?  It was a nice gesture maybe, but I don't think she wanted it painted.  She said she liked the aged patina.

Re: Nervy or Nice???

How about weird? Especially since it was the sister of the neighbor that did it.

Re: Nervy or Nice???

Are all of the mailboxes now the same color in this cul-de-sac? (LOL)  Maybe she just thought that she was doing a favor and "paying it forward", feeling that your neighbor hadn't had the time to paint it herself. Now, if she comes over and starts to mow the grass and weed the flowers and trim the hedges, I might think she is a bit OC. Where was her twin sister in all this? Guess I'd just talk to one of them and see what was going on. I personally think it was to be a favor, not an insult, but I do agree she should have asked.

Re: Nervy or Nice???

I guess her sister was in her house!  LOL  Apparently, she went to another neighbor and asked to borrow a paintbrush...she didn't say why.  AND I saw her sanding on it around 10:30 am...when I went to get the mail, it was around noon and I noticed it was painted.  I bet the mailman got black fingers when he opened the box!!!  LOL  I can't stand HIM anyway...but that is another story ;-)

I am sure she was certainly trying to do a nice thing...but I think she should have asked first, considering the mailbox was not black to start with.  Reminds me of that episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond" when they woke up to find his dad painting their house yellow without their permission!  So now, 5 of our mailboxes are black, and one of them is green ;-)

Re: Nervy or Nice???

Well, if the next one turns black in the next few days or weeks....LOL! I think I'm now betting on the OCD thing, Everything has to be "just so" or they are not happy. But you are right, they (both of the sisters), should have asked.

Re: Nervy or Nice???

UPDATE: So I talked to my neighbor tonight about her newly painted mailbox.  She received a phonecall at work at exactly noon from the lady, telling her she was getting ready to paint her mailbox for her.  She told her, you don't have to do that and she was very insistent.  Luckily I had given her the heads up on the sanding incident, so she was like Ooookay.

Funny thing is, she also painted her flag black.  I am thinking about sneaking over there tomorrow and painting the flag red.  Teehehehehe.  We got a great laugh out of the whole odd incident!

Re: Nervy or Nice???

Maybe you should go over and paint the painter's mailbox!  Laughing

Re: Nervy or Nice???

LOL...wouldn't that be funny.  Actually the one that did the painting lives about a mile down the road... her twin sister is my neighbor.

Re: Nervy or Nice???

I can't decide if it's nervy or nice - I'm afraid I would have to be nervy and ask.

My mailbox kept getting knocked down (wide farm equipment I guess).  We finally asked the mail lady if we could put it in our yard beside the drive way.  She was so nice - gave us permission as long as we gave her permission to turn around in our yard.  All's well that ends well.

Re: Nervy or Nice???

Here is my mailbox story.  I got a letter my mail box that I was too far from the street. Postmaster gave me and my neighbor 2 weeks to move our boxes closer to the street . the mailthe carrier had to jump the curb to deliver our mail . Neighbor was going to get someone to do hers. I called Carlene and said my husband will make both of ours if that is ok with you. He used pipe for the legs and a different color of iron for the base. We got approved to have mail delivered again. Carlene then said I will get someone to paint the pipe and iron the same color. Before she did I went to the hardware store and bought the sandpaper and rust proof paint and painted it .Two weeks later  I called Carlene because she hadn't made a comment to me about the paint job. I didn't know if that was a good sign or bad. She hadn't paid attention .She said I will meet you at the mailbox. We both went to the mail box .She liked it and my husband got a strawberry/ rhubarb pie for his job well done. .
