NEWS ALERT: Crash Involving Mennonites?

Information on this accident is still very difficult to come by.  But apparently a semi went over the median early this morning on I-65 in western Kentucky near Munfordville.  The truck plowed into a van loaded with passengers.  Some news sources are identifiying the passengers as Mennonites.  Apparently 11 passengers of the van have died.  Munfordville is one of Kentucky's oldest "plain settlements", so the location would be on target.  And Amish and Mennonites - who don't usually drive - commonly pile into passenger vans driven by a non-Amish person for long-trips.  I'll update here as more information becomes available.

Re: NEWS ALERT: Crash Involving Mennonites?

So very sad.  Some families seem to have such runs of misfortune.  The AP article I read said that the family's house was recently rebuilt after a fire and that a son had died in a snowmobile accident on a mission trip in the Ukraine.

Kevin, the article also said, "Ropp said the Eshes were Beachy Mennonites, a different branch from his.  But he said both branches share the belief that entry into heaven is immediate and assured for their followers."  I thought Beachy were Amish??

Hi, Kay, good to hear from you! (I'll be emailing you soon, btw).  No, "Beachy" isn't necessarily Amish...there have been splinter groups, etc...so there are some Beachy Amish and some Beachy Mennonites...it gets confusing...I'll be posting more info in a few mins...

The 5:00 news said that there were 2 children that were in car seats that survived the accident.  The family was on the way to a wedding in Iowa.  The settlement they were from was in Marrowbone, Ky.  The accident was not far from their settlement. 11 people died in the accident.  9 of them from one family along with a fiance of one of the girls and the truck driver. The family name was Esh
