Life on a Hutterite Colony.....

This is a short piece that ran today in a Canadian newspaper about a woman's visit to a Hutterite colony.  The article is a bit sparse on some details about the Hutterites, but she does do a good job of exploring the communal aspects of colony life.  SIGH, sometimes a life like that seems extraordinarily appealing to me.  I know I'm romanticizing it and I know some people completely abhor the Hutterite model of living, but parts, just parts of it seem very neat.   The main reason I'm sharing the article with you, though, is for the gorgeous photography.  Excellent, insightful photography not often found in a small-town newspaper.  Some colonies, just like some Amish, are very conservative and would not allow such photography.  Others are more open to it.  It's pretty obvious from the photos that the Hutterites knew they were being captured on film, and what a neat bunch of photos it is!  Click here to read.

Re: Life on a Hutterite Colony.....

Lately I've been very interested in studying about Anabaptist groups, most notably the Amish and the Hutterites, which has led to lots of web research. Kevin, you and anyone who likes the article would probably enjoy the Shutterite flickr stream http://www.flickr.com/photos/kellyhofer/ or blog http://kellyhofer.wordpress.com/, which is that of a young Hutterite self-taught photographer in Canada.

Re: Life on a Hutterite Colony.....

I too enjoy learning about the anabaptist groups.  I currently have only been studying the Amish faith.  A couple of good reads on the Amish are "Plain and Amish" - An Alternative to Modern Pessimism by Bernd G. Langin and "Amish Society" by John A. Hostetler".  I admire the amish because most live out the bible's teachings in their daily lives.  There is another good read "Bible".  I don't know much about the Hutterites so thanks for the info. Smile
