Hutterite Olympic Torchbearer....

Caleb Hofer, a 15-year-old Hutterite boy, has been  - as far as I know - the only "Plain person" to carry the Olympic torch as it has made its way across Canada over the winter.  The torch is on its way to Vancouver for the start of the Winter Olympics next month.  This is purely speculation on my part, but its quite possible Caleb may be the only "plain person" to ever carry the Olympic torch.  The Olympics has only been in the USA or Canada about a 10 times over the past century.  It's doubtful an Old Order Amish or Mennonite would participate in the ceremonies.  I suppose a plain German Baptist could have in previous years.  Even some of the Hutterite colonies are staying away from the festivities surrounding the Olympics, but other less conservative colonies, like Caleb's, are embracing them.  I can attest from being in Canada last week that the Olympics are reaching a fever pitch in that country.  Click here to read about Caleb's torch adventure.  And then since the Portage, Manitoba paper seems hyper-paranoid about people filching their photos you have to click here to see a photo of Caleb and his torch, I can't post it.

A torch runner can purchase their torch for about $400 after their leg of the relay, which I find interesting.  Each runner runs about the length of 3 football fields before passing it off to another runner.

Re: Hutterite Olympic Torchbearer....

Yours is a good question.....Hutterites live in "colonies", which are communal units....there are some colonies which are very conservative and don't approve of having their photos taken.  Other colonies are more liberal/progressive and don't see a problem with pictures, so my guess is that this is a more open/progressive colony....

Re: Hutterite Olympic Torchbearer....

That's pretty neat..and didn't all the kids look really proud! Good for them to be a part of history!
