The Anthem Plays.....

Goshen College, a Mennonite school in northern Indiana, offered the national anthem for the first time in its history yesterday.  An instrumental version of the Star-Spangled Banner played prior to a men's baseball game.  I really wish talk radio and outsiders had stayed out of the debate and just let the college make its decision on its own.  The Mennonite school - by not playing the anthem - was not being unpatriotic, they were instead embracing their college's rich pacificst roots.  People complaining about the anthem not being played at the school would not be much different than attending American Jewish University and grumbling that Christmas isn't celebrated.  It's a Mennonite school, what did they expect when they enrolled?   I think the instrumental version of the anthem is a good compromise, but I think any university - from historically African-American colleges or all-female schools - should be permitted to stay true to their roots.  Click here to read about the anthem's debut yesterday at Goshen College.
