Amish School Fire Inspections Completed

Fire officials in Knox County, Ohio have completed their inspections of Amish schools to make sure they were all up to code with fire safety.  I just like the way Knox County has gone about this. It doesn't sound as if they bullied their way into the schools. It sounds as if they were quite sensitive to local needs and customs and really worked with the Amish to make sure the schools are safe.  The non-Amish fire officials have even offered to help the schools hold "fire drills."  Who does't remember fire drills from schoo? They were always a fun way to be able to knock out 10 - 15 minutes of the school day and enjoy a few minutes of nice, spring weather.  Anyway, click here to read about the inspections and glean some good info about Amish schools in the process.

OK Kevin guess you haven't been to school in a long time Wink  Not only do we have MONTHLY fire drills (burrr during Janurary and Feburary) but we have to document tornado drills (three times a school year), earthquake drills, and my favorite crisis/lockdown drills (once a year).  With the beautiful weather we've been having, I can see a fire drill happening tomorrow.  I think the only reason we didn't have one today is because they had bus evacuation drills this morning.

Sheesh, Bonnie, once a month???? When I was a kid, yea, we did it twice a year.  And earthquick drill??? This is Greater Cincinnati....I know, I know...the New Madrid fault in Missouri gives us a one-billionth chance of a quake sometime.....ah, now what I DO remember (you keep dredging up these long forgotten memories) were the nuclear war drills.  My Catholic elementary school was a designated fall-out shelter and we did do a couple nuke drills.  I never quite understood how if a Russian warhead was headed straight for us and was going to end the world as we knew it, how hiding under our tiny wooden desks would save us.....but, oh well, glad the Cold War is a thing of the past...

The school I work at was also a fall out shelter.  When they finally decide to 'deshelter' it, the custodians were finally 'aloud' to clear out this locked room inside the girls bathroom.  Inside was can food from the 50's, toliet paper, and big bottles of water.  We would tease the head custodian that he could make a 'killing' selling these things.  He would tease us back that it was tomorrow's lunch.  Not sure whatever happen to that stuff......

I remember in grade school (probably the late 80's/early 90s) there was a huge earthquake scare going on.  I lived (parents still do) in the most northeasten county in MO, and to my knowledge we have never had an earthquake.  But some guy was prediciting this enormous earthquake, and so we did have to do a drill once by getting under our desks.  I believe that "scare" was found out to be a scam, trying to get people to buy earthquake insurance.
