Amish Gifts; German Baptist Faith....

Ugh, I battle the same "mall blahs" year after year.  In today's world of suburban sprawl, big-box stores, and retail sameness, it is more and more difficult to find truly unique gifts.  One even has to be wary while shopping small Amish stores.  Some places, even Amish-run stores, offer gifts that are mass-produced items made in China but packaged to look more quaint.  But this is an article that caught my eye out of a small paper in Pennsylvania. Sheesh, if anyone is near this store it sounds like there are some really unique, authentic Amish-made items that would make great gifts.

This is an article about a German Baptist woman in California who was inflicted with the deadly "Strep A" virus, but she rallied to overcome it.  I included this article on today's news docket just because it sheds a little insight into California's small "plain community" near Modesto.

Re: Amish Gifts; German Baptist Faith....

Just as a note, the mom and baby mentioned are doing great. Saw them yesterday.
Another note on plain communities, there are several small mennonite groups throughout CA, but the only other large one (bigger than the German Baptist even) is a group of Holdemans. There are 3 congregations about 30 miles south of Modesto, and another 3 about 150 miles north of Modesto.

Re: Amish Gifts;

I am also disgusted with the malls and the big box stores and in a time of finding more meaning in life I find myself even more disgusted by the behavior of people who go mad shopping at 3:00 AM and the stores who not overtly support the behavior. I'm referring to the trampling to death of a man in Walmart in NYC. Was the savings worth a man's life? Is that what Christmas is all about to these people? Will these junk gifts from China last the year? Is it meaningful? Does it express the Love we have for our family and friends, those in need? God? Jesus? No! I was talking about this to someone today and she is encouraging her family to give the gift of self. Is that more meaningful? Does a gift have to have physical value to pass the mustard? I surely hope not.

Re: Amish Gifts;

Well said, Staib...and that dreadful trampling death is just an incident that made national news...Closer to home, a 16-year-old girl was punched in the face by some unknown adult male in an effort to wrest a $70 camera from her.  The camera was a special offer from Wal-Mart....Animalistic behavior, completely contrary to the spirit of Christmas....It's thuggish behavior cloaked in Christmas....ugh..

Re: Amish Gifts;

The stories are very disturbing!  My husband and mother were talking of a shooting at a Toys R' Us, even...  What comes over people?  It certainly is contrary to the spirit of the season.

Re: Amish Gifts; German Baptist Faith....

Someone else beat me to the correction, but still...the article is a pretty amazing story!  To have come through all she endured with no residual problems is nothing short of a miracle.

Correction noted and made. I DID read the article:), SIGH, too much multitasking=errors.

Re: Amish Gifts; German Baptist Faith....

correction: The mother had strep A, and the heart failure and coma, not the baby.
