The Amish Cook from Oasis Newsfeatures

Alert: Unsolved Murder.......

First of all,  the news media so often tells us when someone is Amish when it DOESN'T matter (i.e. Amish teen busted for underage consumption) and now when the information really would be helpful, I can't find it anywhere.   But here's what we have:  Barbara Weaver, mother of five, found dead in her bed yesterday morning from a single gunshot wound to the head. Her husband, Eli, was apparently away on a fishing trip when this occurred and is cooperating with authorities.  There are plenty of wire stories that seem to infer that the famiy was Amish. For instance, WKYC TV out of Cleveland features horse-and-buggy images prominently in their coverage of the story.  The closest any article comes to confirming the Weaver's religious affiliation is this article from the Wooster Daily Record.   The article mentions Bishop Leroy Keim coming to the family's home to offer spiritual comfort after the shooting.   Keim (and Weaver) are very common Amish surnames and, of course, a bishop is the title for the head of an Amish church.  Of course,  Wayne and Holmes County, Ohio, where this incident took place, are also home to many other breakaway and off-shoot churches of former Amish.   Why does it matter?  Because homicide among the Amish is VERY, VERY rare, whether it's Amish on Amish or English on Amish.   I want to follow this news story closely.  I'll provide updates as I get them, but if anyone else out there has anything to add, please share.  And, of course, our prayers go out the Weaver family.

Re: Alert: Unsolved Murder.......

How sad for the family especially the children to lose their mom in such a way..

Re: Alert: Unsolved Murder.......

http://www.the-daily-record.com will have a complete obituary in today's paper so probably online tomorrow.  That should give religious affiliation in some form.  I can't imagine that they are OO or NO Amish as the stories would surely have made a big deal about it.

Re: Alert: Unsolved Murder.......

The daily record (TDR) does a good job of not making news from "amish" headlines. Example the amish murder/suicide that happened a couple months ago.. never made big headlines, now if this would have been in lancaster, it would have been world news!

This is an amish family... a family who was very very disfunctional. A situation where the lack of education and the habit of "pushing issues under the rug" was very dangerous!  This man according to neighbors and church members had several affairs. Sadly it was one of his children who found her in her bed! Sad... but I have to say TDR does a good job of being respectful to the family.

Re: Alert: Unsolved Murder.......

Oh, how tragic! I wonder if someone knew the husband was away, and could easily access the house. Often, I tend to think of these sort of crimes as "city". I guess, sadly, it happens everywhere.
