I bought my lye soap

I bought my bar soap at a Kentucky state park that had a 'living' fort.  I did not watch them make it but am told that someone comes in and makes it weekly for them to sell in the souvior shop.  I think it was Fort Boonsborro (sp?) or Fort Harodsburg.

lye soap

Years ago, I used to have an older neighbor who still washed her and her husband's clothes in an old wringer washer. She would stand by the washer and chip off pieces of lye soap into the hot water and she hung out the whitest sheets, towels, etc., I've ever seen. Can you buy lye soap these days anywhere in a retail store? I'd like to have some. - Pat

lye soap

I bought a bar of lye soap years ago and never used it.  Instead I have it in my classroom for when others are studying pioneer days.  I pull it out and let them feel it and smell it.  Haven't had any brave students willing to wash with it :)  Carol, I remember my mom doing the same thing with the little bars of soap.  She would say someday I would appreciate what she was doing.  I do miss her wringer washer though.  Now that was a machine that could get the clothes clean!

Soap Making

During WWII, my mother & some others made it  because of rationing-----just couldn't get enough laundry soap.  This was back in the days of wringer washers.  She also used to save our soap scraps from the bathroom  [commercial brands] & melt them together to make one or 2 extra bars----molded in little jello molds.  In our basement, next to her deep double washtubs, she had a little 2 burner gas stove----very basic---no outer covering like a kitchen one.  There, she worked all her miracles with bluing, starch, etc., as well as the soap.  CS

Lye Soap

I used to buy lye soap from an elderly lady who sold it in small butter tubs at the place I went to pick strawberries. She has since passed away, but I remember her and that lye soap fondly. There was nothing better for getting the stains out of kids clothes.

Poison Ivy

When I get poison ivy, it only appears on my face and my eyes swell shut.  It is awful.  When I was in high school, a friend gave me a piece of lye soap to wash the areas on my cheeks with, and it really dried it up.
