Yodeling

Thanks so much for allowing Kevin to tape your yodeling. I loved it and enjoyed listening to your family yodeling together.  I enjoy reading your column every week and can't wait for Saturday to get here so that I can read about your family. Especially your children, and the fun things that they do. I am very excited about your new cookbook. I have several of your Mother's Cookbooks and I am looking forward to yours.

Listening Station

sorry; the stations did appear.  As with others, I don't have high speed so it took awhile to load, then played.  It was interesting to hear.  Here in western PA I am in the midst of a large Amish community; will have to check to see whether anyone yodels.

How do I get this and how do I pay?

Listening to this was an unusual but wonderful experience.    I hope and pray that your traditon continues with all your family and friends.

My grandmother, Elizabeth Reese, came from a family of Pennsylvania Dutch and she always taught me about the Amish and how they lived such a simple but good life.

Yodeling

I have logged in, paid $5 but I still cannot get to the yodeling. I go to the listening station for Yodel #1 and it flips me between the same screens but I cannot find how to hear the music. Help if you will.

How to Listen to the Yodeling

"Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't own it, but you can use it. You can't keep it, but you can spend it.  Once you've lost it, you can never get it back."

Once you go double click on whichever yodel you want to hear under the "Listening Station" area, you will notice a grayish box-like area that has a "Play" icon (a triangle pointing to the right).  Click on this icon... you might have to click it two times... and it should start playing for you.  When it starts playing, that grayish box will become much longer, so I would say if you don't hear anything maybe check your volume (??).

If you have a slower Internet connection, it might take a bit for it to load.. another person commented that was an issue.

Hope this helps!

Need High-Speed

It "would" have been a real treat "if" I had a high speed connection.  I did not realize that is what's needed for this to work.  What we listened to was a bunch of garbbled mish-mash of noise that wasn't pleasant at all.  I was very disappointed.

Nothing against the Eicher Family.  It was no doubt a wonderful experience for everyone else that got to listen.  I just wish that I had known that I needed high-speed to enjoy and really hear what was going on.

Yodeling

Our family really appreciates Lovina and her family sharing the Yodeling with the rest of the world.  We think it sounds pure and ancient.  Today is the first time I've read her column and will look forward to reading many more.  I live near the Adams County Amish and have visited there and the settlement in Sugar Creek.  An Amish family bought my aunt and uncles farm in Martinsburg, Ohio.  I have always admired their way of life.

Thanks, Tricia

re: Tricia

Tricia - Thank you for stopping by! I am always glad to hear from newcomers. The Adams County Amish settlement is probably my favorite out of the dozens and dozens I've visited...very traditional and the scenery is beautiful - Kevin

It was so great to hear a FAMILY singing together.  I so enjoy lLovina's column and can hardly wait for Wed.  It is too bad that more of us don't live as a "family" anymore. when we were raising our 4 boys and a girl we did things together and always had meals together.   So many children do not know what it is like to eat and spend time together as a family.  Thanks for your column, have read it from the time your Mother wrote it. May God bless all of you.

Yodeling

Lovina and Family

Thank you for sharing such a special part of your lives. God bless you all.  Melba

yodelling

still can't find the yodelling to listen to???!

Yodeling

Lovina and Kevin,  Thank you for an early morning yodel.  It was interesting and enjoyable.  I have enjoyed your column for a long time and certainly didn't mind paying for the yodel.  My mother's family is from Lancaster, PA and we know a number of Amish families there. My semi retired uncle provides a taxi service for the Amish, teachers and others.  I've enjoyed getting to know them as well as you through your article.  I am curious to know if they yodel in PA as well.  Thanks again.  Diana

re: Yodeling

Diana - Thank you so much for stopping by and taking a listen to the yodel.  In answer to your question, yodeling does not seem to be common among the Amish in Pennsylvania. It seems to be a skill confined to small settlements of Swiss-descended Amish in Indiana and Webster County, Missouri.  Thanks agains for dropping by! - Kevin

yodel #2

You know, this sounds kind of crazy, even to me, but there is a quality to this yodeling that puts me in mind of some harmonious singing I heard in an African village when they would welcome a new visitor. It was spontaneous and lovely, just as this singing of the Eicher family is. Thank you for making this available for us all to enjoy. Can a recording be made to preserve this unique part of culture like the folk singing of Appalachia has been preserved? As I have noted from the reader's comments regarding their own family memories, it is gradually becoming extinct. I hope that won't happen.

The Lord bless you and keep you!

Yodeling

Thank you from  NW of Warsaw. Enjoyed the clip very much. I must say, it was a real trick trying to get a "log in" set up.  Never miss your column. We have lots of wonderful Amish neigbors. Please tell Lovina to "never stop writing".

Yodel # 2

Enjoyed the yodeling.

Love your column

re: Yodel 2

Thank you....Lovina and myself are very, very grateful for so many people coming to the site...

Yodeling

Love the column and would love to be able to hear the yodeling.

Yodeling

I can't seem to find the Yodeling. Where do I go to find it. I would love to hear it.

Yodeling

Thank you so much for allowing the editor to tape your yodeling music.  I loved it.  Everyone sounded so good.  I also want to thank Lovina and her family for the articles she writess.  It takes time to put together and that means time from her busy day.  I enjoy them very much.  Love in the Lord always

Reminds me of my grandmother

Who read Elizabeth's column faithfully. Every time I read the column, I remember discussing it with her.  Incidentally, her name was Melvina.  And she had problems with people mis-pronouncing it. She would repeat MelVINEa (smile). Thank you.

re: Reminds me of my grandmother

THAT sounds like a familiar dilemma....Lovina's name is  pronounced LUH-VINE-UH....but everyone wants to call her LUHVINIA or LUH-VEENA.

Yodeling

Thank You for letting us listen to your family. You are a talented family. I love the weekly columns and try many of your recipes. It is interesting to know about your day to day living. Thank you for sharing with us, and thank you to editor Kevin for all your hard work. We readers do appreciate it!

Great! A different world!

I could hear the childrens voices, how sweet! SmileThank you for the time & effort you put into making this column what it is! Lovina's life is just what we need in this crazy world we live in! That is the first thing I read in our local paper on Wednesday. To think that people can still have that peace in their lives, is a wonderful thing! Thanks again & keep up the good work!

Yodeling

Hello from Mishawaka, Indiana!  We are a family of Christian homeschoolers who enjoy reading Lovina Eicher's column each week.  Thank you for making it possible for us to hear some yodeling done by a family who has passed down this artform for generations.  It was very interesting and melodious to listen to.  We enjoyed hearing the different levels of skill and difficulty from the children and parents.  I wonder if the Eichers would be willing and interested in putting together a CD for educational purposes?  I'm sure that many homeschoolers would be interested in obtaining a copy to listen to--perhaps one that included short lessons teaching how to yodel in various ways.  Homeschoolers are always interested in learning such things.  It would sell very well in the CBD Homeschool Catalog.  We have collected books on the skills of hand shadows, string art, ventriloquism, etc.  It is something to think about.  Thank you again for allowing us to partake in the yodeling experience!

re: Yodeling

Patricia - thank you for your generous words.  To the best Lovina and I can determine, her church would frown on something so commercial like a CD.....so this "listen" is the best we can offer for now....although packaging it as part of an educational catalog might be different.  Something we can think about. Thanks again for coming! - Kevin

An interesting project.

An interesting project.  How good to be able to hear authentic yodels by this talented family.  I enjoy the weekly column and appreciate all the effort the editor and author put into it in letting us have a peek at the daily routine of this fine family.

Yodeling

Lovina, Thank you so much for letting us hear your family yodel.  I have been a faithful reader of your column since your mother started it.  I love reading about your family and the amish.  Thanks also for the great recipes.  I wish your family a very Happy and Healthy New Year.
