Amish Yodel #1, Eicher Family Yodelers

This yodel stars the entire Eicher family, including a brief solo "cadenza" by Joe at the end. Please note that audio quality is that of a field recording, and was not commercially produced in a recording studio.

Price

It's hard to believe that people will pay $3.00 for a cup of coffee or $10+ to see a movie and then complain about paying a few dollars to hear the family yodel.  I've been reading the column for years and always wondered about the yodeling whenever Lovina wrote and mentioned it, so it was certainly worth it to hear.  You had also mentioned that this was a way to help pay back Lovina for all the time and effort put into writing her column -- are people really so mean spirited to complain about it?  I know I'm not always the nicest person in the world, but come on folks, you can give up a few bucks to hear what may soon be a lost art without complaining about it.

Yodel

I had to go to another computer in order to listen to the Yodel due to my dial up service.   I went to our local MUSIC STORE (where I work) and everybody in the store had an opportunity to hear the Yodels.   There were several families of Home Schooled Kids waiting for their piano lessons, and it was such a treat to see their faces when they heard the Yodels, especially when they heard the children.  It was an opportunity to teach children about other cultures and to expose them to new traditions.   It is so important in today's society to hold on to what is so valuable in each tradition.   It is wonderful that they are able to hand down a wonderful Folk tradition such as this Yodeling and to continue to keep it alive for generations to come.  Thank you Kevin for giving all of us this peak into another 'world' and to the Eicher Family for allowing us to share in their traditions in such a special way.

re: Yodel

Elayne - Thank you so much for sharing that.....really means a lot to hear that you enjoyed it yourself, but that you were also able to share it with others who enjoyed it. I definitely think there is some educational value to exposing oneself to harmonies from different cultures....I appreciate you taking the opportunity to share that with some children for learning purposes! - Kevin

  Lovina is greatly admired

Lovina is greatly admired for assuming responsibility for this column upon the death of her mother.  Being a young mother with children and all the chores she performs, I greatly admire her taking the time each week to write.  The amount was nominal to hear this special talent.  It is quite easy to hear the joy the family has in yodeling.

Thanks so much for allowing all of us into their special world. I have always been facinated with the lifestyle. I read Beverly Lewis non-stop. I love the articles weekly in our local paper. They really do seem like family. As for paying to hear it...I don't mind. A very small price for something so wholesom and refreshing! My children are 11 and 13 and thought it was pretty cool too. Please send the family our love. And keep up the good work Kevin!!!!!

Amish yodel

Because I had Amish ancestors in Switzerland, I was very interested to hear this. But your system was not user friendly. I sturggled with it for at least 10 minutes. Why does it ask for my birth date? And then when I finally got to the Listening Station, I clicked on a yodel and waited and ........nothing. Finally I discovered that I had to click on the icon that looks like a horn and then the arrow. You should have a place that says click here like you had previously.

  • I started reading the column when Lovina's mother was writing it.  I admire the family very much, and enjoyed listening to the yodeling.  However I too had some problems signing up and using the site.  Finally I clicked on both icons and it started.
Birthday

Celebrating  my daughters  SARAHS 10th  birthday~ Our Granny wanted to share some yodel  with her. We  sung along!

re: birthday

Oh, that is so neat...thank you for sharing that!

Yodel

What a joy to hear the family sing!  How wholesome!  Hearing them sing reminded me of stories from long ago of my family singing around the piano -- in the days before television and even radio.

I'm grateful for your giving us glimpses into the Amish world.

I enjoyed listening to the

I enjoyed listening to the yodeling. My husband used to yodel--country music style.

Wonderful talent - thank you for sharing a special family.

yodels

Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciated hearing their family, you read the article every week and seem to get to know the family,  It reminded me that my 84 year old mother used to yodel to us, I have to ask her to try again tomorrow, loved it so much when I was little.  Happy to help out with a monetary gift to them also as it sounds like work has been slow for her husband and they still have plenty of work to do on their new home. Thank you again for this opportunity.

love the yodeling

I just joined this group even though I have read every word I have ever found in my newspaper. I didn't mind paying and thank you so very much for making this available for us . So kind of their family to allow us to hear this and this makes them real and sound like such a loving family. I thank you for all,

I had a hard time getting the last part of the sign up right..guess I am not as human as I should be ]: But glad I took the time to keep trying,

re: love the yodeling

Carol,

Thank you so much for coming by.  And I hope keep stopping by even after the yodeling is gone. Being the Amish Cook's editor sometimes can be a bit lonely of a job, so I love all the "company" people provide on the site! - Kevin

Smile on my face

I certainly enjoyed listening to this.  My Dad used to yodel

when he played his guitar.  I miss that very much.

heritage

I really appreciate the family being willing to share part of their heritage with the rest of us! Being kin, their voices blended so nicely, even on a "rough" recording. I,ve enjoyed the column for many years, coming to feel, as many readers undoubtedly do, that they are special friends. because they open their home to us in their column. I admire their simple lifestyle, and glean many useful tips besides the recipes. Please convey my thanks to the family.

Amish Yodel # 1

Pretty good

Thanks

I enjoyed it a lot. Since we homeschool, I even had the kids listen to it. My daughter, 15 yo, thought it was interesting, but my son, 17 yo, wasn't to sure about it. However, we all agreed that it was a unique experience!

re: Thanks

Yea, for teenagers listening to yodeling might be akin to torture:) Yodeling is not exactly a part of today's trendy music scene!

Thank you

May God  continue to Bless you richly.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
