"Who's Online" Feature

fending's picture

So... We took out the Who's Online feature last week for a couple of reasons: (a) To clean up the left side of the site a little bit, (b) to create room for other content, and, most importantly, (c) to see if anybody missed it. Heard from several people on the subject, but I thought it might be good to open up the discussion a bit.

What do *you* think? If you miss it, why?? If you didn't like it in the first place, as a few people said, why not?

OTHERS ONLINE

GOD BLESS YOU

WELL, I THINK IF YOU DIDN'T SIGN IN YOU COULD STILL LURK ABOUT AND READ and no one knew you were here, right?

it was sort of nice to know someone was here and might post an answer right away if there was a question.

i enjoy being able to come here enough that whatever the decision, i will be back.

"who's online" may not return

That's rather interesting! The LuvMaerz reason for wanting it is *exactly* why Kevin & I put it up there, providing - as Kevin puts it - a connection, however loose, to other users. But the counterpoint is a desire for anonymity, something that's fading in popularity (and possibility) as social networking websites start to take control of the Web.

Well, for now I think we're going to start rotating in some "placeholder" ads until the feature meant to replace "who's online" is done - just so it doesn't look so bare in the interim.

Keep those comments coming, though... I kind of liked it, too. :)

who's online

I am glad that feature was removed. I would rather look in privately. That feature actually lead me away for a while, just because I did not like being that public. I feeling much more comfortable to come in to the site and roam around without feeling like I am being watched.  Thanks for taking that feature off!

Same here

Title says it all Smile

I do miss it

Personally, I kind of thought it was neat to see what other "regular" members were online at the same time as me, as well as how many visitors.  It didn't take up that much room on the screen.  Wink
