Change A Comin'

Okay, I've heard enough from people to lead me to believe this site need a bit of an overhaul.  I'll confer with the site's trusty webmaster in the coming days to see what is doable and what isn't.  I promise to Lorraine and some of the stalwarts who like the site as is that these will be "improvements", not simply cosmetic changes.  Soooo, next step, anyone have any specific suggestions of things you'd like to see on this site or not on this site?

Re: Change A Comin'

One last thought on this subject, since I happen to end up as the example.  Sometimes there are things said on the web that a person just wouldn't say if they were face to face with that individual.  I've noticed a little bit of that here, one of the story links today, I think it was the Mennonite store in MI story; had "rules" posted for making comments on the site.  They were really good rules to follow.  I guess I am thinking of the old saying, "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."  It just seemed that opening the discussion on change turned into a chance to pick on others, rather than making suggestions on improving the function or mechanics of the web site.

Your avatar's are beautiful!  Don't take that to heart.  Not sure where the "butchered chicken" came from...

Re: Change A Comin'

My choice is have comments listed as they come. I don't mind picture ,quotes or something else a reader adds. God sometimes has a way to reach me when I'm not wanting to listen. The quotes or someone writing a verse is God's way in my opinion to make me stop and listen to what he wants me to do or say. Kevin, Keep up the good work! I know you will try and do the right thing. Pleasing 100% of us just isn't going to happen.

Re: Change A Comin'

Hi, I want to say that I enjoy the webpage as it is, but websites constantly change, so maybe it is time for a change here as well.  My suggestions are: I've always found the side columns with the advertisements to be distracting.  I know you have to show the advertising, but is there a way to maybe put them at the bottom of the page, or somehow separate them a little better?  I would also suggest making the Amish Cook logo at the top of the page bigger.  I don't think the pictures and quotes that come with some of the comments are a big deal; I agree that you can skip them if you don't want to read them.  I like the account information links at the top left of the page, and I also like having the main stories on the home page.  That seems very user-friendly.  I would suggest the topics of the tabs be arranged in a different way, because it seems redundant to have a tab for the home page, which has both your (editor) comments/blogs as well as the Amish news stories, and then have separate tabs for editor blogs and Amish news stories...you might be able to reduce clutter by combining and/or eliminating some of the tab links.  Well, that's all I have, I hope it helps.  Good luck!

With talk of changes, all that runs through my head at this time is remember "Pay for a Yodel"Surprised

LOL...oh, it wasn't all THAT bad, was it?  It was a valuable cultural experience, and I can still imagine the singing in my head Smile

Re: Change A Comin'

You're right, LuvM, it wasn't that bad....it was worse....

Re: Change A Comin'

Ugh, BK, you had to bring THAT up...what a disaster that was....

Re: Change A Comin'

Change is good, need it sometimes just to make sure everyone is 'awake' and make improvements, however with change will come those wonderful comments and problems that happened......

If people want to have a quote before or after a comment---so be it!

After all you can always skip reading the quote, and sometimes the quotes are nice to read.

Re: Change A Comin'

I agree with Tenped, no pictures of the comenters or quotes.  And what is that picture of junebug anyway? looks like a stretched out butchered chicken. jkrings

Wow, they are definitely some avatar-haters coming out of the closet!  LOL  It doesn't bother me much either way, but having an avatar is a pretty run-of-the-mill thing on 99% of the blogs/websites out there...at least the ones I visit.

Take a nice close look and you will see a giant icicle next to a snowy tree!  It is all melted away from our yard now, but it was so beautiful, so when I see that photo pop up it just reminds me that it is still winter, and the God made the beautiful snow and iciles for us to enjoy.

If the "quote" part was not included as a signature I would include a Bible verse anyway!  That's the way I sign most everything - even my bills get a verse on them! It's just who I am.

To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Titus 2:5

Re: Change A Comin'

I think one should be able to add some form of signature if desired, as it gives readers sort of a (partial) image of the person.
It should, however, be more clearly separated from the main text. At moment a fast reader like me will unvoluntarily read all of it in one go. That makes the layout unnecessarily confusing and sometimes slightly funny, which I am sure is not intended by e.g. you, KJuneBug:
"...is a great recipe for a cake. To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home..."
(I hope you won't take that amiss - I do not intend to criticise you, just to demonstrate the issue.)
In short: I would prefer a more clearly structured layout for the posts.

Re: Change A Comin'

Not sure why I'm being singled out here, it's not like I'm the only one with a quote! Thanks, Martina, I'm usually pretty careful to use my line spacing - as to avoid the above mentioned problem, so again not sure how I ended up as the "example" .

You know, I have to agree with this.  I think it is fun to have a quote, but it does get a little confusing while both writing and reading posts.

Re: Change A Comin'

Perhaps the quotes can be italized?  I don't have a problem with quotes/avatars (with one or two exceptions, but I shall not name names), they give a person an identity online and I don't think that is a bad thing. I love all of the feedback you are all giving me. It's very thoughtful, very helpful and I am going to incorporate as many of the suggestions as I can....I'm hoping for a big site overhaul this spring.

That is a good idea about the quotes being italicized.  I was going to mention something like that :-)

Re: Change A Comin'

It would be nice if the comments went in order from first to last instead of how it is now with the most recent ones at the top.  Sometimes I forget that I need to start at the bottom and it gets confusing to read.

Re: Change A Comin'

I could do without the pictures by commenters and their quotes before or after the coments.

When the site changed way back when to what it is now, I will admit I was a little disoriented at first.  But I am used to it now, so I honestly can't give you a gripe!  LOL  I will adapt to whatever changes you and Brian decide to make Smile

Re: Change A Comin'

I think the # of comments should remain on the bottom, instead of being moved to the top.

Re: Change A Comin'

Two things, maybe a leading photo and story line, that you would click to read even your comments on that story.  The other would be to have the # of comments line at the top of the story, instead of the bottom.
