Amish Diaries....

A couple of thoughts on a story in today's New York Times. First of all, it's perplexing to me (not in a bad way necessarily) why the nation's newspaper suddenly seems so interested in the Amish?  An article in today's paper is probably their fifth or sixth Amish-related piece in the past six months.  Maybe they'd actually like to carry The Amish Cook each week?Smile  Anyway, there was an auction recently of old Amish family diaries and journals collected from various communities. I would have loved to have attended that to bid on a few, but it sounds like many in attendance were Amish trying to collect old family history.  It's neat to see a sentinemal streak among the Amish, who, as the article accurately notes, aren't necessarily known for such emotions.  Click here to read about this unique auction.

Re: Amish Diaries....

I am lucky enough to have the Memories written by the Amish Grandparents to their Grandchilden. It is a small booklet with memories from 1918 until 2007. My parents have been friends with them for many years but I only met them when I started driving  my parents places since Dad had to give up driving. The book is a treasure, and I am so greatful that I was aloud to have a copy. I feel like they are old friends.

Sounds like a fascinating piece of history! Too bad you found out about it too late to attend. It would have made for another of your interesting "road trips"! ~Diann

Re: Amish Diaries....

Kevin.. that is so interesting!! I read a farm wife's diary not long ago. I do have my diaries from the ages 9 till about 16. After reading the farm wife's, it inspired me to start again. Just a great way to leave a little piece of yourself for the generations to come!!
