Kentucky Ice Storm Amish; Amish Economy

Kentucky has been glazed over like a Krispy Kreme doughnut for almost two weeks now from a horrible ice storm.  While most Kentuckians have been brought to their knees by the storm, the Amish have emerged relatively unscathed and ready and willing to help their neighbors in need.  An event like a huge power outage just highlights how dependent we've become on "the grid", while the Amish are perfectly able to function as usual despite the ravages of nature.  This a really insightful piece.

I received a note yesterday from a woman in Virginia.  It was a nice note, but she made the following observation at the end:

"I know some of the Mennoite have computers but have the Amish
allowed that? I guess what really makes me sad is the amount of
compromising they as a culture have done over the last 10 years. It is
really scary. The whole world revolves around the all mighty greenback."

Truly, it's more complicated than that and I won't go into it all here.  But the Amish are a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional church with some very conservative members and some more progressive ones.  In my view, there is no "right" or "wrong" way to be Amish, it's a faith and just as there are very doctrinal Catholics and very non-doctrinal ones, the same is true with the Amish.   The "compromises" the reader mentions are often simply spurred by the economic realities of the world around them.  Anyway, some of these compromises with technology are ably described in the recent issue of "Dental Economics."  Yes, I never go a day without reading my copy of "Dental Economics":).   But, really, this is an excellent article
