Recipe vs. Receipt, Revisited

Thought you all might find this an interesting footnote to the recipe/receipt discussion Kevin posted a while back.  I have been reading a book called "A Thousand Years Over a Hot Stove" and just ran across a section on Catharine Beecher.  I guess you could call her the Martha Stewart of the mid-1800s.  LOL  At any rate, she authored a handful of publications on domesticity, well-ordered homes and, you guessed it, matters of food, including:  "Miss Beecher's Domestic Receipt-Book" (1846).  There's even an excerpt from the Receipt-Book:  "How to Salt Down Beef to Keep the Year Round." 

Oh, and if the name Beecher sounds familiar...her sister, Harriet (Beecher) Stowe, was the author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin." 

On another note, and at another part of the book, the author discusses a Hidatsa Indian woman's stories of her life and the Hidatsa's traditional farming methods.  She recalled that the Hidatsa women knew when it was time to plant their corn by "observing the leaves of the wild gooseberry bushes."  ;o)

You know, I just ran across a blog that used "receipt" the other day!  That is the first time I have ever seen that (bsides when Kevin mentioned it!).
