Amish Dark Chocolate Cake

This is a really good cake that Lovina occasionally makes. You'll need to go to confession after having a slice of this!

3 cups sugar

1 cup lard

1 cup cocoa

4 eggs

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup milk mixed with 4 teaspoonss baking soda

3 1 /3 cup flour

2 teaspoons vanilla

2 cups boiling water

Combine sugar and lard.  Add eggs and cocoa and mix well.  Add dry ingredients alternately with milk and soda mixture.  Add boiling water.  Pour batter into greased and floured cake pans and bake at 350 for about 30 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted comes out clean.

Lard isn't really available here. Will Crisco work as well? I haven't seen lard in the stores in years and years.

3 cups of sugar and a cup of LARD??!!  You will have to do more than go to confession... you will have to go run a marathon Wink

It's double speak, like the mother goose in Charlotte's Web!!!  This sounds like a very rich cake, I am curious as to the chemical make-up of milk and baking soda mixed together; there must be some reaction that occurs.

I am curious about that, also.  Both milk and baking soda are "bases" on the pH scale, so I wonder what the reaction would be.

There's still a typo!

Should read:

1 cup milk mixed with 4 teaspoons baking soda

Not:

1 cup milk mixed mixed with 4 teaspoonss baking soda

May have to try this for Christmas - but not before or my diet will not go well!

Kevin,

I think there's a typo.  It's written: 1 cup mixed mixed with 4 tablespoons baking soda.  One cup of what?

Thanks,

Trish

Re: Amish Dark Chocolate Cake

oops, I fixed it there were two typos...it should  be one cup milk mixed with 4 TEASPOONS of baking soda
