Getting photos small enough to conform with specifications

KJuneBug's picture

Fending, this question is for you!!  I am having trouble gettting my photos down to the maximum sizes for the web page.  I did it once, but I can't do it again.  I need steps I guess. The photography part is a piece of cake for me, when it comes to the emailling and adding photos to websites I fail miserably!  HELP!!!

Ok, that shrunk it to the 85 pixel size, but it is still a 2.87mb in compression size.  That is the number I cannot shrink.  I hit the controls in my Windows Picture Manager, but it does nothing to change the compression.

So what do I do about that?

ARRR! :)

That's the absolute quickest method - the  http://www.shrinkpictures.com/create-avatar/ site using the "85" as the physical size. The biggest reason is to get the size down - the limit is 30KB per pic per user to keep our costs down. We went through a rough patch with bandwidth usage when this was developed, so we didn't wind up releasing an "upload your huge picture and resize it after" feature. That's something I'm looking at for the next site version, though - until then, bookmark the shinkpictures site!

Brian, I have a question... when I want to change my picture, why does it continue to use my old pic, and then change to the new one a day or so later?

The answer, in a word, is CRON. [Hey, you asked, right?? :) ]

On servers like the one we use, there is a service called CRON that can run certain programs as many times as we like each day/hour/minute/month/you-get-the-idea. (And yes, it comes from the Greek word chronos.) Since it takes up a lot of resources to run all of the programs that we ask of it - and we do, admittedly, ask it to run absolutely everything in one fell swoop - CRON runs once a day. When it runs, it does a lot of housekeeping, re-indexing the site search and, oh yeah, getting some of the new user images into the profiles.

It's mildly annoying, I know, but it gives us a chance to catch some untoward stuff before it reaches the public (no comment on how often that's happened...) and keeps the site quicker during the day because it's not running mini-CRONs all the time.

Thanks for the explanation... I figured it might be something like that. Smile

KJB, try this.  Make the picture you want into an "avatar".  That is what I had to do when I was making my etsy page.  You can do it at this website :  http://www.shrinkpictures.com/create-avatar/

Oh, and don't forget to put 85 in the box that asks you how many pixels.

Luv,

How funny, I just got my new picture to upload! I picked it before I saw your new one, and they are virtually the same concept! Great (Momma) minds think alike!  We decided a while back to not put our pictures on the web, so I get to be creative with cute little fingers and toes!  Love those tulips! They just sing - hey, warm weather is coming, just you wait!!

Thanks for the in the resizing of my photos, I will try to keep them fresh and up to date.

No problem!  The new pic isn't showing up on my screen, yet, for some reason.  Tuesday was my FIL's birthday, so we had a party outside.  There were some flowers growing there, and I had the girls sniff them for me for some cute pics.  But little Bella ended up snorting the tulip instead!  LOL  I am going to make another one of those bound picture books from Walmart for my mom for Mother's Day... made her one last year and she loved it!
