Monster Garage Sale

LuvMaerz's picture

Just returned home from the "Monster Garage Sale", which is the 3rd one they have held so far.  They have started doing them bi-annually at the big civic center in Quincy, IL.  It is sooo fun!  They have 150 spaces full of all kinds of bargains... toys, clothes, antiques, etc etc etc!  I talked my mom into going with me this time.  Left home at 4:45 am, got there at 6 am, stood outside 30 minutes (brrr) then stood inside another 30 minutes until the start time of 7.  It is so much fun... especially if you are a shopping junky, like me, who starts looking forward to "Black Friday" in the summer!

We got some good stuff, and was ready for lunch at Burger King at 10:30 am Wink

Re: Monster Garage Sale

Kevin, In this part of Kentucky it is known as US HWY 42 (that's what the road signs say), not sure why the number is different in other parts of the country but have heard it refered to as 127. Sorry for any confusion.  We have the Richwood Flea Market close to my house. That is like a big yard sale especially in the summer when anyone can 'rent' an outside space and sell what ever they have.  I do like to go there on a Saturday when I am not busy.  When my son was ROTC we bought many of his needed supplies there.   I have heard that close to you is Turtle Creek which may be close to what Luv is talking about.  Never been there before but I have a SIL who goes there about there once a month and finds really good deals there.

Re: Monster Garage Sale

Just a correction...The world's longest yard sale is on US 127....But, yes, Bonnie agreed...bad idea for such a congested two lane road...the only Luv is speaking about sounds much more sensible, contained to one large building!

Re: Monster Garage Sale

Luv, I had that when I I took a bus trip to Dresden, Ohio home of Longaberger Baskets.  Went to the Homestead this year at Christmas just to go to the factory surplus store.  They had some Christmas dessert cups on sale for two dollars box of two (if you every price/ bought Longeberger you know this is a great deal).  The bus tour I was on then went into the town itself.  Neat town built up thanks to Longaberger with MANY shops.  Any way one of the shops had the same cups for $30.00!!  My friend and I laugh and wished that we had bought more of them to take back home and sell for a profit. Maybe next bus trip........

It is great to walk the building and find all sorts of things.  However, there is a lady who has carted in vintage Fiestaware to all three of these Monster Garage Sales.  I love Fiestaware and treated myself to a set of beautiful Peacock blue last Christmas.  This lady is asking $15 each for chipped saucers, etc!  I bought my 4-piece place settings for $25 new.  You would think by now she would realize it is way overpriced!

Oh, I wish we had those here.  I am a thrift store and yard sale junkie and have been all my life.  Since I could stand in the front seat of car, back when our parent's arms were seatbelts, my mom would drive and I would holler TURN mama!  I'm glad my mom passed that love down to me.  B/c most of my decoration in our home is found at them and all our clothes come from there.  Now my daughter is even known by name at two Even my husband has gotten more into the "Find" sense he is off five days a week now.

Proud stay at home wife to a handsome/wonderful husband and  Mommy to a beautiful blue-eyed Lilly-Rose.

I have been going to garage sales with my mom as long as I can remember... it was always a Saturday thing with my mom, gma, and me.  Go to garage sales at 6:30, then go to Hardee's for breakfast!

The #1 rule of 'salein'.... if you think you MIGHT want it, pick it up first, then decide.  Otherwise, it might just be snatched from under your nose!

Re: Monster Garage Sale

Back in 2000 when I was running for a seat in the state assembly here in southwest Ohio I was a little shy when it came to door-to-door campaigning (SIGH, strike 1) each day I would peruse the garage sale listings in my district and go campaigning that way...I was a grat way to meet voters because the residents would already be sitting outside and then customers at the garage sale would be there....I thought it might be a very effective way to campaign....Of course come election day I got clobbered, so....I guess that wasn't such a great strategy after all.....but I did get some good deals:)

Re: Monster Garage Sale

I live only a few blocks from the worlds longest yard sale that is held in the fall on US hwy 42.  Never been to it, instead I avoid that part of town for the week-end.  Past years it's been so crowded on the road plus people will park on the side of the street and keep on tire on the road.  Bad idea when it's a two lane highway.  Either last year or the year before someone was trying to cross the street and was killed.  Even more reason why I avoid that part of town.
