Wow....Awesome Photo....

Wow, our site regular, LuvM, captured this gorgeous image of a bald eagle making his or her way through southeastern Iowa.  This eagle seems to have found a great spot right along the Mississippi River.  I've seen a bald eagle twice in my life.  Once was on the frozen plains of North Dakota where Rachel and I got a really good view of one flying right along the road.   Another time was in south Florida when one perched among some mangroves.    Thanks for sharing this, LuvM!

Re: Wow....Awesome Photo....

I don't think there's any creature more regal and elegant.  Great picture!

Re: Wow....Awesome Photo....

Four bald eagles have established residence at Eastwood MetroPark in NE Dayton recently, and two are building a nest. This is quite exciting, as you normally don't see them in our area. I am looking forward to trying to get a look at them this spring! Yes, we do have lots and lots of cardinals here in SW Ohio, but I enjoy seeing them, especially the females with their "red lipstick" beaks!

Re: Wow....Awesome Photo....

Could someone enlighten me about the word "bald"? This beautiful animal has a lot of feathers on its head alright. So where is the baldness?

Re: Wow....Awesome Photo....

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's just because - at a distance - the eagle can appear "bald" because of the white head feathers....

Re: Wow....Awesome Photo....

My daughter has started to enjoy eagle-spotting lately, and I was able to snap this today and try out my new lens :-)

Re: Wow....Awesome Photo....

tell me about your new lens I've heard you mention it a couple time now

Re: Wow....Awesome Photo....

My camera is the Sony (alpha)350, and it came with a 18-70mm lens.  My hubby felt it was IMPERATIVE (don't ask me why, I tried to talk him out of it) to upgrade the lens.  The new one is 18-250.  The only difference is I could probably take a pic of my neighbors in their living room, if I felt so inclined ;-)

ps...If you know anyone who would be interested in my original lens, I am looking to sell it.  It is only 6 months old!

Re: Wow....Awesome Photo....

18-250 that's quite a range! I really really like my 18-135, it seems to do it all for me; I would like a lens that gets me a lower f-stop though.  I didn't know that Sony made an SLR with changable lenses.

Re: Wow....Awesome Photo....

I'm with you KJuneBug, see them alot here in Washington, but I never get tired of seeing them.  They can swoop down and pick a trout out of the water, while I sit in a boat all day and get nothing!

Re: Wow....Awesome Photo....

I have never really taken notice much until recently.  We live along the Mississippi, and there is a dam nearby.  My husband says that they are here so much in the winter because the flow of the dam keeps the water from freezing, and they can find their fish much easier.  Once warm weather really hits, they will disperse until it gets cold again.  They actually have an event called "Eagle Days" here, and they have areas on the bridge set up where people can watch them.  Usually there is an exhibit at the mall, and someone brings in an eagle.  They are so big and powerful-looking.  They have a real intensity and intelligence in their eyes. (And I am not a bird person!)

Re: Wow....Awesome Photo....

We have eagle watching events up in Skagit County, there is a particular spot along the Skagit river that the eagles prefer.  Then for the most part you don't see them in big groups like that the rest of the year, we do see them throughout the year though, if that makes sense.

Re: Wow....Awesome Photo....

Oh, I know, they've gotten my Dad all in a fit by doing that!!

Re: Wow....Awesome Photo....

You've only seen a bald eagle twice? We see them all the time here!  I must say though that we really enjoyed the cardinals in Ohio and other birds we don't have here when we were back there.  We tried to spot the different birds.

Re: Wow....Awesome Photo....

Oh I have cardinals coming out the wazoo, but bald eagles...a rarity here in SW Ohio!
