Want Fries With That?

I'm a little disappointed that after a day spent in Berne, Indiana's Amish settlement today that this photo is the best I could come up with.  It's not that I didn't see more beautiful, intriguing sights - I did -but they all had people in them.  I saw an army of Amish men crawling on top of a roof to replace the shingles, I saw beautiful buggies, adorable bonnet-clad and straw-hat wearing children.....but I just wasn't comfortable photographing any of the scenes.  I have a rule of thumb when I am among the Amish, if I feel like I have to "sneak" to take the photo then I don't take it.   Soooo, after I went to McDonald's for lunch I noticed the "buggy parking" sign in back of the restaurant and snapped this photo. There are hitching posts for the horses and even a trough that has water for them.  No buggies were there when I was having lunch, but, hey nice to know the Golden Arches is willing to contribute to everyone's obesity, even the Amish!  McD's is non-discrimatory when it comes to who's arteries they are clogging!Smile

LOL, I have gray hair - more and more every day, and my daughter has it, too. Don't think she got the "young" genes I inherited, unfortunately.

Thanks, KJuneBug, but it's true! I may not look it, but I will turn 60 this year! I was blessed with "young" genes.  :) When my dad passed away a couple years ago at 94, he could have easily passed for 80. Mom's the same way. My daughter and I could pass for sisters.

Re: Want Fries With That?

Email me some of your genes....I'm getting gray and I'm not even 40:(

kevin,

I thought it was the lighting that you use on your video recorder that was making you look grey around the edges!Surprised

Re: Want Fries With That?

Sorry, I wasn't home, BK. We went camping last Wed. for a few days and just came back Monday. I've been to Berne, but would love a chance to go again! It's been a long time - my daughter was a teenager then and she's 37 now!

Re: Want Fries With That?

No way that you have a 37 year old daughter! Your look to young!

Re: Want Fries With That?

IMHO - Until recently, I would try very hard to "respect" how other people live, i.e. we have had lots of contact with LDS people, especially when I was working at the local scrapbook store (LDS couple owns it) - I would get dirty glares for brining in a coffee to work, then on our way to a reception for an LDS couple I had an epiphany, I'm not LDS - coffee is tasty and no where in the Bible does it say, no coffee drinking! Guilt trip over! I think that rule applies here too, in regard to photos of Amish folks, while I would not be out there with my camera in all the Amish faces, saying, "hey, look here I want a good photo for my scrapbook or blog!"; I do think that it is possible to respectfully photograph Amish people.  You probably could have artfully photographed the guys on the roof without being disrespectful.  I'm guessing you weren't the only tourist in Berne today running around with a camera, remember you are not Amish!

I think of it this way, were a modest dressing family, we go out into public, we hear people talking trashy, have to deal with people smoking, people who dress "normal" for the world... Do we expect them to act different around us?  No and it is not up to me/us to judge them back, God will deal with those issues.  All we can do is honor God, they best way we know how, keeping focused on the cross.
