Amish Girl In Critical Condition

A 9-year-old Amish girl from Middlefield, Ohio is fighting for her life this morning.  She was hit by a passing van while walking to school yesterday.  This is just a personal observation, but a lot of effort is put into educating those unfamiliar with Amish areas to be alert for slow-moving vehicles and the like and this is a good thing.  But from my experience often the most dangerous drivers in Amish country aren't the tourists or the people just passing through, it's the English who live in the area.  I don't think drivers are deliberately being reckless, but I think there is a natural complacency that comes with familiarity and that can cause more problems than a more alert tourist driving through an area.  Let's keep Ida Yoder in our thoughts and prayers!

Meanwhile, a bizarre accident on a Mennonite farm near Lancaster, Ohio.  A bull charged a 77-year-old man who died from injuries sustained in the attack.  I'm not sure if this is a "plain" church, but the settlement near Bremen, Ohio (Turkey Run) is the oldest  Mennonite congregation in the state.  So the area has deep, rich roots in the Anabaptist faith.
