Happy Ascension Day!

In many Amish communities, families are spending today in prayer, reflection, and rest. Today is Ascension Day which marks the day Jesus ascended into Heaven 40 days after his reserrection from the dead.  So count 40 days after Easter Sunday each year and you have Ascension.   In northern Indiana's large Amish settlements many factories - even those owned by non-Amish - are shuttered for the day since so many of their employees wouldn't be clocking in.  Lovina and her family plan to spend the day fasting and then will head over to Emma and Jacob's to break their fast with an evening meal.

Interestingly, not all Amish observe Ascension Day.  In all my years around the Berne, Indiana Amish settlements the occasion was never marked.   I think this has to do with different traditions that have evolved among the smaller Swiss settlements near Berne and the more traditional "main-line" Amish churches with solid Germanic roots.
