Shipshewana Day Trip

We're going to be taking a day trip to the Shipshewana and Middlebury, Indiana area next Monday.

What shops and stores are "must see?"  Thanks.

P.S.: Das Dutchman Essenhaus is one of my "must see" eateries! I've never had a bad meal there.

Re: Shipshewana Day Trip

I love visiting Shipshewana and was just there in August.  Had lunch at the Blue Gate and then spent many hours wandering the back roads.  Met many wonderful Amish people selling baked goods from their homes.  We stumbled across two mechantiles in small communities that catered to the Amish.  One in a little village called Emma.  Not sure where the other was located.  Bought several items for Christmas presents.

Re: Shipshewana Day Trip

We had a nice, sunny day for our trip to Shipshewana yesterday, and saw many horse-drawn buggies there. (I wonder if the Amish do their shopping on Mondays, there were a lot of buggies parked at Eash Sales). We were able to stop at Eash Sales (a must for anyone who likes to cook), Yoder's Department Store, The Blue Gate (we had lunch in the restaurant and admired the beautiful furniture for sale in the shop there).

Also we walked up and down a few side streets and looked into the shops. Finally, we made our way to Das Dutchman Essenhaus in Middlebury and loaded up at the bakery. Then it was time to head for home -- we drove thru Goshen (a nice, picturesque town) and on down towards Nappanee, then it was onto US 30 and back to Crown Point. A nice day trip.

Oh Amish Eater........you live in CP.  My hometown, wow.  St, Marys, Andrean, Lake Co. Fair, Cozy Corner (if you are old enough to remember, Oh well, memory lane.  I moved from there in 71,  Never been to shipshewana, but my brother and sister-in-law go often.  The next time we are home in the summer or fall, I am going to make them take us.    Karen

Re: Shipshewana Day Trip

Hi, we moved from Illinois to C.P. 5 years ago -- it was the best move we ever made. We are very pleased with our new hometown. (The only drawback is it's hard to find a good bakery here in NW Ind.).

Re: Shipshewana Day Trip

It sounds like a wonderful trip! I hope to make it there someday.

Re: Shipshewana Day Trip

Thanks, we'll have to check 'em out.

Gohn Brothers in Middlebury.  Phone for address 800-595-0031

There's a huge bulk food store and on the same road is a place that has lots of cool stuff for sale,  Eash sales 260.768.7511  I think Yoder's Department Store is on the same road too.  Spectors fabric store has quilts for sale as well.  Spectors is across the street from Yoders.  Wish I was going!
