Brown's Market in Hamilton, Ohio

I wanted to let those that lived in the area- that Brown's Market will be going out of business, at the end of Oct. They are running a silent auction all this week to end on the week-end, of Amish furniture...then the whole store will be gone- the end of the month.

This is a very sad thing.....and I am so sorry to see this happen....if you have any needs of bulk foods...dry goods.....best get there soon. I am shopping on Sat- as I will not be able to get any of these items anywhere enar here......short of driving 2 hrs to Adams county...which is the nearest to me. sigh.........It was not so much the economy....it was the people here....so many did not understand this type store..and stayed away.......

Here's an article, dated Oct. 18th, from The Oxford Press (OH) about Brown's Market changing the focus of their business in order to survive:

Re: Brown's Market in Hamilton, Ohio

Read about this earlier this week and was very disappointed to see this business close down.  I'm guessing the economy did play a large part in the success of Brown's because of their need to sell the beautiful and expensive furniture.  Surely the rent on that huge building was steep.  Kevin, I'm shocked you haven't been there.  Wink   For future reference, Barn n Bunk in Trenton gets regular trucks from Kaufman's Bakery and other stores in Berlin,  They will also do what they can to bring in other items from Holmes County that you like.  They've done this for us on a couple occasions.  Check them out.

Re: Brown's Market in Hamilton, Ohio

Barn N Bunk (um..sorry to everyone the hyper-local discussion here) I have been to many times:)  They do a great job...I remember when they started the business way, way back when...probably almost 20 years now?  It's been neat to see them expand their offerings...their Sunday morning buffet is awesome!  But I plead guilty to not going to Browns!

Re: Brown's Market in Hamilton, Ohio

I remember when Barn n' Bunk opened too....they had a lot of flowers too....never went to the buffet.....it is just where Brown;s sits..that it is a struggle......a majority of the apt complexes surrounding it..are welfare ones...and many down the road are too....so that right there..is not a good source of revenue...then you have people that do not know how to make custard from a dry bulk mix, jello either...unless the Jell-O box tells them how.......just many things like that...that made it a hard sell.....but...the Antique side will stay open- I don't think he is tied into that like he is with the food and furniture......so go shop the antiques! These people have had an opportunity to set up really nice clean booths.....it is fun to go on a Sun afternoon and look around. It will be dearly missed by many.

Re: Brown's Market in Hamilton, Ohio

Thanks for sharing that, that is ashame.  I think you're right that the problem may well have not been the economy but the perception of the store.  There are no Amish settlements near Hamilton, so I don't think people made a connection in their minds....I live 20 minutes from Brown's and have never been there, I just never made the "connection" in my mind either, I guess....consumer culture often comes down to subtlies and habits....I actually had only heard good things about Brown's, so that is sad news....

Re: Brown's Market in Hamilton, Ohio-GREAT NEWS !!!!!!

Now you HAVE to try and get there Kevin!! I was in tonight...and they said they are STAYING OPEN!!!!!!  Bulk foods and antiques...I think the Amish furniture will be gone tho..but they will stay open!!!! I am so happy for Mr. Brown, and all the employees..they are the nicest group of people there.....I was talking to one of them tonight and she asked me if I had ever been to Ashburys"(I think that was the name)- it is a market in SugaeCreek..I told her I had been there 2 weeks ago when I went to Dover to visit my sis-in-law..and when we walked in- I said- this is Brown's Market!!!!  Turns out, Mr. Brown was so impressed with that market- it led to him opening this one...he goes up north a few times a month and buys inventory there.....So..if anyone that reads this ....lives anywhere near Hamilton...go shop at Brown's!!!  Smaller than Jungle Jim's....but friendlier and cleaner!!!!!

Re: Brown's Market in Hamilton, Ohio-GREAT NEWS !!!!!!

I've never been to any of these places, although they do sound enticing.  I'm just happy to hear that another small business is managing to stay open, and I'm real happy for the folks who own it.  ~ Janice

Re: Brown's Market in Hamilton, Ohio

Well...get over there!!! HAHA ! I know you are busy..but seriously..if there are ANY bulk goods you like..you do need to get there soon. It is set up just like the big markets in Berlin, etc....and Mr. Brown has a huge farm down in Ross...along 128.and he has lots of his produce there.......he has worked so hard...but...for the most part...people have forgotten that food comes in more ways than in a box...and you can use dry goods to make things....using eggs, milk, etc....and this part of town......just not enough like that here....and...I think..the aspect of "Amish" equated into cheap...and it is not- price wise...and there is not much appreciation for hand work...well..I could go on and on...but...Mr. Brown is a stand up guy......the Amish would be there on Saturdays- sometimes with buggies   and their kids too....the other thing he did- which was neat- was have an antique market too...so many sellers with classy booths...they will be out a space too......you should get there..to see how he took a HUGE white elephant..and turned it into a cool market place....
