Visit To A Bulk Food Store..

Bulk food stores are a staple of most Amish settlements.  Such stores usually sell flour by the sack, cornmeal, candy, detergent and anything else a large family might wish to consume in bulk.  A recent spin on these stores has been the addition of "scratch n dent" sections.  With a tanking economy, a careful shopper can find some real value.   I love visiting the bulk food stores in Amish areas. There are large ones, like E & S in Shipshewana, a really neat store. But some of my favorites are just the non-descript, non-touristy ones tucked away on backroads in Amish settlements.  Miller's Bulk Foods in Adams County is one such store.  Click here to join me on a brief tour of Miller's.

Went to E & S store today and really enjoyed it they had a great variety and the prices were reasonable.

My favrite Amish bulk store is Beachy's in Arthur, Il. All kinds of spices at about 75% less than at chicago area grocery stores. Also some harder to find stuff like pine nuts and organic baking mixes.I try to make a trip there prior to the holidays to stock up. The savings about pay for the trip and it's a fun area to visit.

Luv, try the video again.  After getting a couple of error screens, I finally got to see it. ~Diann

Thanks Diann!  Yes, it worked for me this time.  That looks exactly like the bulk places I have been in before... except a whole lot newer :-)

Oh, snap!  It says this video is no longer available :-(

There is a small meat market nearby (gatewalker has been there, I know), and Dave sells the bulk/repackaged spices, snack mixes, etc.  I just love that stuff!  Those snack mixes usually have the little rice crackers and spicy sticks that I love, and these kinds of stores are the only places you can get them.  I have spoken before of Zimmerman's General Store, a Mennonite grocery/fabric store in tiny Rutledge, MO.  They have an excellent selection of bulk packaged foods, as well.

We have a Bulk food store near me - yes KJuneBug is right - they buy in large quantities and then repackage into a variety of different sizes.

I know you want Kevin to answer- I was thinking that bulk, meant, that it came to the store in bulk, then they repackage it to smaller shelf sizes.  I was thinking the same thing, as you that there should be larger packages of things

Re: Visit To A Bulk Food Store..

Love buckeye candy and it looked like it was under three dollars for the tray.  Not a bad deal for handmade candy.  When I think of bulk, I think of 5 gallon tubs of stuff. Didn't notice any really oversize containers, so can you fill in the gap?
