Intercourse On My Trip...

I texted my wife, Rachel, today with the message: "I hope I won't be in trouble, I didn't realize there would be intercourse on my trip!" Most wives might have been a bit alarmed at such a revelation, but Rachel has had the names of most quaint Pennsylvania Amish hamlets drilled into her head through the years so she was able to respond with a good-natured "hope you are having fun!"  Okay, so I spent the day IN Intercourse (acutally, I am not sure that sounds much better).  Intercourse is a tiny town east of Lancaster on the road to Coatesville.  It can get very crowded and touristy in this area, but this is still the "slow season", so I pretty much had the place to myself today.  I was here doing some research, which I'll explain more about another time.  One of the real gems I stumbled upon was Zook's Roadside Stand on the main road just east of Intercourse.  This business has been around for over 40 years and sells wonderful homemade, hand-made foods made from local ingredients.  The shelves of the small store were filled with unique items like homemade crab-apple jelly, red beet jam, pear butter, and corn relish (all of which I bought - SIGH).  There is also usual Amish-style fare like whoopie pies (which I also bought - DOUBLESIGH).  Elsewhere I found an Amish woman selling homemade root beer out of her cell.  I bought a few bottles.  It was very "rooty" flavored, but good!   It was a very neat day. Lancaster County's Amish settlement is unique is many different ways, which I'll discuss more in the near future.  Click here to join me on a brief video walk through of Zook's.  I was joking about spending a lot of money, in actuality, the prices are as amazing as the food. I bought like 10 different items and my total bill was only around $15.

So are you going to go to Smicksburg or Big Valley? You going to meet up with Erik?  Did you get some apple butter?

Re: Intercourse On My Trip...

H Kevin,

Just read through today's trip update. You are about an hour's drive from us here in Delaware. I am very familiar with where you are visiting. I pass through the area on the way to my home in western PA. It is the favorite part of my drive! Just after we were married, we lived in Chester Co, where my job as an investigator for the Dept of Aging allowed me to travel in the western/southern areas that border Lanc Co. I loved driving through the more rural areas, as it reminds me of home.  I always make a point to stop for some fresh lemonade and a homemade soft pretzel  ( Yum) along Rt. 340 in Intercourse, next to Zook's Fabrics. Enjoy your travels!

momof3, LOL, at your comment! My friend lives in Lancaster, PA, - I went through all three of those little towns when I went out to see her. There's another town out that way called Lititz. That's a funny name, also!  Laughing

Re: Intercourse On My Trip...

Oh geez, Diann, I wasn't even going to bring that town name into the discussion......Smile

Re: Intercourse On My Trip...

Kevin... I am soooo jealous... I live in northern NJ and can't wait for my trip in the coming months!!!  LUCKY DUCK....oh by the way, my husband and his friends LOVE to talk about some of the village names up that way. They are SO FUNNY like school boys.

Re: Intercourse On My Trip...

You must mean...Bird-In-Hand leads to Intercourse which leads to Paradise (on the map that is)!  My husband does the same thing.Laughing

Re: Intercourse On My Trip...

YES! Too FUNNY! Laughing

Re: Intercourse On My Trip...

You are in the neck of the woods where my husband's sister & family live. I learned in a Sunday school class once that the word intercourse means something similar to communion. You could say visiting or any other word meaning communication. Oh what twisted minds we humans can have!! Liked the video, look forward to more! By the way, my cookbook came yesterday. I do love it.Smile( The Amish Cook that I said I had ordered).

Re: Intercourse On My Trip...

All the homemade foods looked great and yummy!!! Many of the things you've shown are not diet friendly, has the 'healthy' eating craze been reflected any in these stores?

Re: Intercourse On My Trip...

No, BK, I've just not seem the healthy food trend that much in Amish culinary culture, except in subtle ways....For instance, olive oil is gaining in popularity for cooking......But, you know, the Amish have a "free pass" for a lot of this stuff.  It's called "hard work."  Hard, physical work.....They aren't computer-sitting sloths like me....so an Amish man eating a whoopie pie after a long day's work is very different than me after sitting in front of a computer all day......

Re: Intercourse On My Trip...

Agree, except I could see me eating 2 whoopie piesSurprised

Re: Intercourse On My Trip...

OK too personal here!!!

Re: Intercourse On My Trip...

Oh geez, I was hoping people would read it closely...Intercourse is the name of a town in Pennsylvania...that's all, no hidden meanings!

Re: Intercourse On My Trip...

I know, I know... Just being silly myself!
