    Where are my bookmarked recipes?

  2. Andrea Orbik says:

I am unclear regarding the recipe for the apple dump cake. Do I prepare the cake mix according to the package directions, or do I just use the cake mix as is?
    Thank you

Andrea – Just use the cake mix as is, BUT – IMPORTANT: use a 1 /2 cup of melted butter, not the amount listed in some newspapers and online. The 1 /4 cup was an error. And welcome to amishcookonline:)

I keep looking for the Apple Dump Cake recipe and can’t find it. I love the column and usually cut out all the recipes in the paper but somehow this one got away. Can you help???

      Rhonda, here it is!
      Apple Dump Cake
4 cups peeled and sliced apples or 2 pints of canned apples
      4 teaspoons cinnamon
      3/4 cup brown sugar
1 box of white cake mix
      1/4 pound butter
DIRECTIONS: Grease a 9-by-13-inch cake pan. Mix cinnamon and apples in a bowl and then spread evenly out in a cake pan. Layer the cake mix on top of the apples. Melt butter and drizzle over the cake mix evenly. Then sprinkle the brown sugar on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes or until apples are tender. Cake mix will still appear white.

    Regarding the Apple Dump Cake.
Do you mix cake according to directions or just pour cake mix into pan (dry)

I can no longer find the Pear Bread recipe that was published in The Amish Cook column from October or early November, 2011 in Mansfield’s News Journal. I would appreciate it if you could share that with us again. Thank you.

      Jennifer, here it is!

      HOMEMADE PEAR BREAD

      3 cups flour

      1/4 teaspoon baking powder

      1 tablespoon cinnamon

      3/4 cup oil

      2 cups sugar

2 cups peeled and grated pears

      1 teaspoon baking soda

      1 teaspoon salt

      1 cup pecans

      3 eggs, beaten

      2 teaspoons vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, combine dry ingredients until evenly mixed. Then in a small, separate bowl, combine liquid ingredients together and then blend in with the dry ingredients. Pour into two lightly greased loaf pans. Bake for one hour and 15 minutes. Cool for two minutes before removing from pans.

I just wanted to say that I made the Poor Man’s Steak yesterday for lunch. My son was home for the weekend from school and my younger one is picky so I thought I would try it out with them. They loved it. I have to make a double batch next time. We had Poor Man’s Steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, and mixed veggies. I had made on Sat. a pumpkin bread recipe from Lovina but used my mini loaf pans instead of reg. loaf pans. My oldest loves anything made of pumpkin. Just wanted to share this with you. Thank you for the site. I love reading the articles and collecting new recipes!

Thanks for the kind words. Did your daughter say around when that recipe appeared in the column? That would help me narrow down the search! – kevin
