The Amish Cook from Oasis Newsfeatures

Slow Amish News Day.......

There isn't much going on in "Amish country" today, so I've resorted to scrounging through the blogosphere for something to discuss.

First of all, there's a semi-funny joke about the Amish Cook on someone's blog. I could get on my sanctimonious high horse and say how this just feeds old stereotypes about the Amish.  However, I've also written before about how the Amish have wickedly funny senses of humor. So if the Amish wouldn't be offended by something, neither will I. The website linked to above also offers some insightful analysis about why two-newspaper towns are such a rarity these days.  This is a topic still on the minds of many Cincinnatians after the demise of the afternoon Post newspaper.

A good recipe for "Pennsylvania Dutch Brownies" appeared on a food blog.  The Ozark nature of the website caught me off guard at first, but the recipe appears to have genuine Pennsylvania Dutch roots with its liberal use of molasses and other simple ingredients.

I've seen the Harrison Ford movie Witness probably 20 times.  But I can't picture the character Moses Hochleitner.  Maybe because I'm usually too enthralled with Kelly McGillis.  Anyway, Moses was played by a young - at the time- actor named Viggo Mortensen.  That role in Witness was his big-screen debut and he has gone on to have a very successful acting career. Catch up with him here. And does anyone remember him?

Geography lessons in a Movie?

I had pulled this blog up yesterday AM, then my oldest was off to classes for the first day of winter quarter.  One of her classes is geography. I was mentioning to her that you showed that Viggo M. was in "Witness", she has not seen it. Lo and behold, her Geography prof is going to have them watch the movie! Good thing I mentioned it, she wouldn't have known what he was talking about! Part of the class is cultural and socioeconmic geographical study, which will include the Amish! Lucky for her, she has inside connections to the Amish culture, hopefully that will help get an A in the class.

Another note I spoke with a fellow at Rod and Staff yesterday, in Crockett, KY. They are again experiencing some very warm unseasonable weather. Nice for the wardrobe, not so nice for the crops, if it continues.

Have a blessed day all!

Nice looking fellow :)

The other night we were watching "1 vs 100" and the three choices to one of the questions included "Viggo Mortensen" as an answer.  I had never heard of him before, but what a handsome man he appears to be Wink

re: Nice looking fellow:)

Ah but that was him 25 years ago!  SIGH of course you could say the same thing to me about Kelly McGillis....

re: Nice looking fellow:)

Okay Rachel just set me straight...I guess even today  - 25 years later - he is still "eye candy"...she says he has "aged well"... Sheesh now I want to go see what Kelly McGillis looks like!

Kelly McGillis

Unfortunately Kelly didn't age as well.  She was beautiful in Witness, but she isn't now, and it's not to do with her age.  Happened to see her on a tv and she looked familiar to me.  Took quite a while to realize who it was.  Google her, there's a few photos of her now.

Joke

Carol,

the joke is one of those where if you had sound effects
you would here the drum do a roll and then the cymbols crash but no one
is laughing :-)  Basically he's commenting about the Amish Cook
having a web site eventhough the Amish don't use
computers(implied).  He then trys to recover by telling about
Kevin(English editor).  Yes it was a bad joke, but he did tie in
the writers' strike as a way to 'excuse' his bad joke.

Viggo Mortensen

Viggo's Amish character didn't have a speaking part. You can see him eating fried chicken at the barnraising picnic with Harrison ford and in a few other scenes but he didn't have a speaking part.

Viggo Mortensen

I think he had dialog with Alexander Godunov at the beginning of the movie about the horse.
