That's the absolute quickest method - the  http://www.shrinkpictures.com/create-avatar/ site using the "85" as the physical size. The biggest reason is to get the size down - the limit is 30KB per pic per user to keep our costs down. We went through a rough patch with bandwidth usage when this was developed, so we didn't wind up releasing an "upload your huge picture and resize it after" feature. That's something I'm looking at for the next site version, though - until then, bookmark the shinkpictures site!
