Hutterite colonies are part business, part insular culture. The business part really helps preserve the insular part. If a Hutterite colony can achieve a measure of self-sufficiency, they can remain a closed, conservative sect. Still, sometimes outsiders are alarmed when they learn a Hutterite colony is coming to their area. The objections are often based on environmental impact, but Hutterite colonies have gotten more “green” in recent years.
