Red Alert

The last cola wars we witnessed were brutal. And some of the highly visible casualties sported impressive pedigrees...anyone remember the New Coke and Crystal Pepsi? Well they're at it again. But this time, buoyed by the success of last year's Diet Coke with lemon, the folks at the old red and white are betting that this latest creation will do just fine.

It's called Vanilla Coke and if you haven't already heard the hype it's supposed to be the best thing since....well, since the classic Coca Cola. The vanilla-infused soda is primarily being marketed at those folks old enough to be able to remember the good old days of the soda fountain. It should be available in your area by the time you read this.

Even though Pepsi is still enjoying the success of last year's fire engine red-colored, cherry-flavored soda, Code Red, it's not one to be left out of this year's competition. The Pepsi crowd has thrown its hat into the ring with Pepsi Blue, an electric blue, more fizzy, berry-flavored version of its flagship cola, Pepsi. It's being marketed primarily to teens (pre and post) and college kids. Look for the blue cola in July.

Don't forget the Doctor. The folks at Cadbury Schweppes will soon be unveiling the alter ego of Dr. Pepper. Red Fusion, the first new product in over a century from Dr. Pepper, will reportedly be fruity and tinged with the classic taste folks love. It should be available in mid-July.

Lastly, SoBe, the company known for its non-carbonated offerings, has entered the race by unveiling its first carbonated drink. Its newest buzz product is called Mr. Green, a ginseng-enhanced soda. SoBe products are mostly found in convenience stores and gas station markets. Mr. Green should be available to you by the time you read this article.

Remember to treat yourself and to try a new flavor or food every week! Your tastebuds will thank you for it!
