Grillin’ For The Super Bowl? (And a good homemade barbecue sauce)

Do the Amish care about the Super Bowl?  I’ve learned never to make blanket statements about them.  I’m sure there’s an Amish person somewhere today rooting on Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.  And elsewhere, there’s probably an Amish person pining for the Giants.  But, on balance, most Amish will mark this day with little fanfare.   That doesn’t mean the Amish don’t do a little “tail-gating” of their own.  Okay, this isn’t actual tail-gating, but this is a scene of a beautiful day outside grilling at the Amish Cook’s house last summer.  In the above photo, Elizabeth’s boyfriend Tim brings some more chicken to the grill.  Doesn’t this look like a tasty scene?  With the unseasonably mild weather across most of the Midwest, outdoor scenes like this are bizarrely common.

This is a common barbecue recipe in Amish households. Enjoy!  Now, who do you want to win: the Giants? The Patriots? Or who cares?

CHICKEN BARBECUE SAUCE

1cup butter- melted
1 cup cider vinegar
2 cup water
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon. pepper

Mix together and heat. Soak chicken in sauce before grilling. Baste.

Also good on chicken is to sub soya sauce for the worcestershire sauce, add a pinch of dried mustard. chicken usually needs the extra fat for grilling, so I wouldn’t skimp on that.

I’m not certain, but I THINK I can smell that chicken on the grill!
Couldn’t care less who wins the Super Bowl, but I do enjoy the commercials.

That is a “mop”, not a sauce. The sauce goes on after the chocken is done and always made with a tomato base. I brine the chicken with “the mop”, instead of dabbing it on. This also goes for ribs. One could also use a “rub”.
