Tapping trees...

Hopefully next week we will be tapping trees. Of course it is weather permitting, but the first of March is the time. Anyone familiar with this site knows that we do it "old fashioned"....with buckets and we boil down in pans. This year, tho',I hope to be able to email Kevin some photos to post(with hubby's help). Lord willing and the creek don't rise(LOL!), I should have some tapping photos to share soon, and after that some gathering sap and boiling sap photos to share. I can also try to show some finished product...if we have snow on a finishing day,I'll show maple syrup-on -snow candy. The little ones just love that! See you soon!!!Wink

Re: Tapping trees...

Thanks for the pictures Barb.

Re: Tapping trees...

These are all such neat photos and accounts, Barb....I think I'll have to stop by your place sometime for some pancakes and homemade syrup!  Or let us know how to buy some for you to ship!

Re: Tapping trees...

You would be more than welcome to stop by anytime!! Wayne has some more photos to post of gathering and cooking, but we have to be able to coordinate our posts. I am usually in later than he is(I cook the sap--and that's a long process). He helps gather, and then goes home.Since he has to be to work by 7am, at this time, our paths don't cross at normal times. Kinda screwy, but it's for a short time..so we adjust. He does not work weekends,so I think we can get them to you then....at least we'll try!!!!

Re: Tapping trees...

Barb, thanks for sharing your photos with us! Love all your trees! That looks like a lot of fun. We have gone to the demos of maple syrup making at Indian Lake state park, where we camp. We hope to attend their annual festival this year on March 20-21.

Re: Tapping trees...

we really enjoyed seeing you and the sons/grandkids in the heavy snow photos. it looks like you guys were having lots of fun doing some real hard work at the same time. the dog looked happy too..lol. we can't wait to see more of the maple syrup gathering. we here in ohio can finally see the grass and i can't wait for spring to get here either. my grandkids will have to go to school til the 4th. of june, that should make them real happy!!! it is about 55 degrees here today and nice the rest of the week...hopefully it is going to stay this way.

Re: Tapping trees...

Beautiful pictures.  Thank you for letting us see them.

Re: Tapping trees...

Awesome and beautiful pics! Look at all that snow!  I'm a huge fan of maple syrup, as it's 100% natural. Guess what? We might be finally getting some snow here! How silly is that?  Right now (sunday night at about 8:30p) it's pouring down rain, with a little wind, it's been getting colder all day... Yesterday we were up to 59f - now we are going to be hovering right around that freezing mark.  We will see how it all shapes up.

Re: Tapping trees...

Hey, we want to see some photos of you too, Barb! Laughing

Re: Tapping trees...

We are winding down after a long day in the woods. Hubby got alot of photos, which he is now sorting(or whatever he does). And,unfortunatley for me ,he has already picked one of me to share(carharrts and allTongue out). I think tomorrow evening, after work he will be ready to post some. All in all, it was a great, although tiring day.

Re: Tapping trees...

Finally, here are some photos of tapping trees. The first one shows our sugar shanty(where we boil the sap). The next few show the woods where we tap the trees,my 2 sons and some of the grandkids...and shield your eyes! Me, in all my winter garb-glory(ugh!). Hubby took lots of photos,it was hard to choose...anyone want to see the really stuck tractor? (They had to dig it out!). I'll try to get some soon of gathering sap..then boiling.

Re: Tapping trees...

That would be cool Barb- Of course this year, February is like early May here and like Antartica where you are! All bets are off!

Re: Tapping trees...

barb, you are a woman after my own heart. we were raised in the 'burbs' and we did not get to see anything like that as a child. i can just see you with your buckets and taps for the trees/with the fires going. i can also see you in your long heavy winter garb and boots to match....send me some syrup when you are all done....lol

Re: Tapping trees...

Hey! We are tapping on the 28th,as my oldest son is able to help then. We will(with Kevin's OK) post some photos.(SCARY!!!). And,it is not an impossibility to send syrup. We can discuss that later!! Been doin' this forever..and I still love it. I guess it gets in your blood or something..as my 82 yr. old Dad says,we got the fever.(The winter garb ain't so attractive..carhartt coat and bibs, and big ol' boots.."tools of the trade"...makes me look fatter than I actually am).
