Looking for a recipe I used to have from an old order cookbook that is lost. If anyone has a recipe I would appreciate it. These are light- tasting cookies with a melt in your mouth sensation , used to be a family favorite. Thankyou
It did work great!!! I remember helping mom gather the nuts and spreading them. Then a week later, helping her 'pick' the nuts out of the rocks. Best part was NOT getting black hands by picking them up!!! She then stored them in her garage until they were needed. Spent many of times hitting those nuts with a hammer, learned how to hit them just right so that the nut split down the middle and you could get two halfs instead of pieces. Ah I haven't done this in over 10 years, what memories......

it doesn't shell them but gets rid of a lot of "stuff" if you put them through the hand cranked corn sheller- the one that the bare cob pops out of the top and the grains of corn fall into the bucket. My father figured that one out so we wouldn't have ugly stains on our hands, or at least fewer
My mom use to put them on the gravel driveway and let the cars/trucks run over them a couple of times. Surprizing enough, it took off the outer shell but would leave the inner shell intact. Also for some reason, it helped with the 'black' stain one would get from in between the shells. Only problem with this method is fighting the squirrels and chipmucks once the outer shell was gone.

My Dad has a couple of trees on his land. As far as I know, the only way is a hammer!! Your hands always turn a funky color from the tannin. I have heard of people boiling the nuts briefly to make shelling easier, but I have never done that. It might work, but not sure......

I hope this will help, the original recipe called for buttermilk but I have used sour cream with good results. 1 cup sugar,1cup brown sugar,1 cup butter or margarine,3 eggs,3 1/2 cups flour,1 tsp. soda,2 tsp.baking powder, 1 cup sour cream,1 cup chopped walnuts. Cream sugars, shortening & eggs. Sift dry ingr. and add alternately with sour cream. Add nuts. Drop by tsp. onto lightly greased sheets and bake at 375 for 8-10 min. Good luck!
Thankyou so much Barb for the reply and recipe. I already made a batch then realized I used all my walnuts up in a prior batch of brownies . I substituted silvered almonds on top of the cookies , which turned out wonderful.
Re: Sour cream walnut cookies
