Singing Amish

I was up early this morning.  I went out to my sunroom to check on something and I heard this sound off in the distance.  As it came closer, I found it was an Amish woman singing while riding in her open buggie.  Her voice was so angelic.  It was beautiful.  I wanted her to stop so I could hear the rest of the song, but she turned the corner and I could hear no more.

Re: Singing Amish

Last summer when visiting Amish friends who own an organic dairy farm, my visit was in the barn while they were doing chores. The wife, Esther, was singing hymns as she went about her chores. It was beautiful, not only the angelic sound of her voice, but the fact that her mind is stayed on the Lord in all that she does.

Another time, at a suppertime meal, I dicussed the upcoming presidential election. I mentioned Obama. They never heard of him. Somehow, I found that refreshing.

Re: Singing Amish

Also, the Mennonite Historical Libary at Goshen College (Goshen IN) has some great recordings of Swiss Amish yodeling - Some recent ones of Fannie Klockner and some made by folklorist Alan Lomax in the Goshen area back in the 40s and 50s.  The older ones are not as virtuosic as Mrs. Klockner but some are quite beautiful.  I don't know if these particular Lomax recordings are available on any reissue anywhere.

Re: Singing Amish

Fannie Y. (Schwartz) Klockner, former Old Order Amish from Adams Co. IN, now living in Louisiana, is a wonderful yodeler and has a number of CDs and cassettes for sale.

This is her address as of Feb. 2007:

Richard & Fannie Klockner
2142 Highway 135
Winnsboro, LA 71295

Re: Singing Amish

The Amish do have beautiful voices and also I have heard Amish yodel.  My grandma, first generation in American ( Parents were from Switzerland) could yodel and I loved it.  I still love to listen to yodeling.  Where can you get CD's of yodelers???

Re: Singing Amish

Yes, I agree with kevin, how lucky to live in an area where you can hear/see unscripted moments of Amish authenticity!  Do you mind I ask where you live?

Re: Singing Amish

I live just outside of Oxford, PA.  The southeastern most part of Pennsylvania.

Re: Singing Amish
