SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

So, what are your thoughts on the annoucement of Oprah's departure from her show.  I'm not a core Oprah watcher, but I really like her and her show and I think an important voice will be lost when she leaves her show.  She comes across as so genuine, relatable, and real.  I guess we'll all have to savor the final 18 months of Oprah!  By the way, how many of you remember Phil Donahue?  He was really the one that blazed the trail for the likes of Oprah, Rachael Ray, and others in the genre.  And, on this topic, does Jerry Springer still do his show? (Not that I care, his show was always pretty trashy, as was Maury's)

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

I don`t like her no matter how much she gives--Dollar for dollar, we all give more. We buy items she has ads for. We pay more on each item, and a portion goes to pay for the ads. She tries so hard to "Talk white", then, I think she missuses her white guests.

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

I remember Mike Douglas and Phil Donahue.  THAT was good TV.  (i'm beginning to sound like my mom when she talked about the Midwestern Hayride and Lawrence Welk!Surprised)

I occasionally enjoyed Springer when I needed some raunchy entertainment, but he was mayor of Cincinnati and seems to be a smart man.

I won't miss Oprah.  I don't watch her but I do recognize her charitiable contributions.

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

Oh yeah, it was Midwestern Hayride in our house, as well as Lawrence Welk -- always! I grew up in Dayton, Ohio, now living just outside, in Fairborn.

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

Then I'm sure you would remember Paul "Baby" Dixon and the Ruth Lyons shows!  I couldn't wait until summer so I could watch Paul Dixon!  He was so funny and wasn't gross about it.

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

Oh, yes, I remember them! I was in the audience of the 50-50 Club in Cincinnati a couple times. I think that's what Ruth Lyon's show, then later, Bob Braun's, was called.

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

omg........someone who remembers those two shows is a good friend of mine...i grew up watching the midwestern hayride on saturday nights here in cincinnati. cat, where are you in ohio? i live in montgomery about 5 miles north of 275 east, just off of montgomery road.

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

I am originally from the Bellefontaine area.  Moved away for awhile and now I'm back in the Bellefontaine area.  I love Cincinnati.  We found a great doc in that area...he saved my hubby's life at Mercy Hospital in Fairfield.

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

Lawrence Welk - every Sunday night; that was about as close to going to church as I got as a child!  I learned to dance during LW!  We'd push the coffee table back and my Dad would take turns with my Mom, my Sis and me; then he'd just dance with my Mom and Sis and I would cut up the rug!!!  So much fun, good memories!

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

Oprah is not fading into the sunset, believe me.  She'll have her OWN network (Oprah Winfrey Network) to fill with whatever she wants.  And that's a little frightening to me.

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

Agreed!! In my previous post I said she has contributed to society..some good, some not so good. I think she's too politically motivated..and when one has that much money to buy officials,it is indeed frightening!!!

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

I was not a big fan of Oprah, but I think she did some good charitable work. I'm sure she will probably be successful in whatever she pursues.

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

Dinah Shore,  Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas remember those????  When I was a big TV watcher I often watched Oprah- now that we aren't TV watchers, its not something I keep up with; and if you hadn't mentioned it here I probably woudn't have heard for a while!

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

I like Dr. Oz.  I agree with farmhousebarb... I like to learn something.  I have learned things the several times I have watched Dr. Oz.  I'm glad Oprah gave Dr. Oz a greater audience.

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

I prefered Phil Donahue.  The last time I watched Oprah is when the Osmond Family was her guest.  This was when George Osmond passed away,

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

I have not watched alot of Oprah, but I do think she has done alot for society(some good, some not). I remember Phil Donahue, I used to watch him when I was in high school. I always thought he had class! And,oh boy, what about Mike Douglas? (I'm really tellin' my age now!!!!). Not sure about Springer..although I admit to seeing it a few times,I always thought it was "staged"trash...no person could have all those problems!!!! I guess the older I get,the less I care what some tv personality has to say. Most of it seems to be rating oriented gibberish. I still like to actually learn something. That is the very reason I love this site..there is always something new to learn!

Re: SIGH, Bye, Oprah....

i used to watch oprah on a daily basis, but i think that she ,somehow, forgot where she came from. she was on public assistance in her early, early years. i really like whoopie goldberg,(she came from the same background) she HAS CLASS, and she never forgot where she came from....this just my thoughts on the matter.
