Susan, you did a wonderful job writing for your mother this week! And your French Toast recipe is very similar to mine...so I know it is a good one! You have a real talent for describing your work with horses as well as the mischief your brothers pull. Great job and I look forward to seeing future articles by you.

I'm glad a couple people mentioned A&W drive-in! I miss that place, the root beer and the root beer floats in a frosty mug! There are a few around, but not in line with the destination. Jolene in KS

The comment was made in the article about the Amish using modern tools. I have some close Amish friends that run a shop making rocking chairs. Yes! They use modern tools (planers -saws and sanders), BUT!!! all the tools are run by either air or hydrolic motors NOT ELECTRIC !!! The real Amish furniture is all solid wood and quality all the way.

We have some Amish pieces too, bought from people who are, or who know the craftsmen. The big cabinet on our front porch came in 2 pieces and was carted home from Lancaster County in and on top of our minivan. That was an interesting trip, since we also had our 2 kids along. We have a favorite store and love all the stuff we've gotten from them.

When I needed new chairs for our dinning room table I was luckly enough that parents have Amish friends. I had a total of ten chairs made over the years. The Amish man lived and worked in Topeka, Ind. He has pasted but I think his sons still have the work shop.

I've never taken Megabus, but a couple of my friends have and they've enjoyed it.

I too love traveling by train, but it's usually not going to be your cheapest, quickest option. I've taken Amtrak down the California coastline - LOVE that trip, and also took it from Minneapolis to Lafayette, IN. I want to take the train out West sometime. When I do that, I will get at least the smallest sleeper room so that I have a place to lie down and be quiet. That price also includes meals. Then compare the cost of that ticket to the cost of your gas, hotels, meals, and wear and tear on your car. That's a more accurate comparison.

Something for you to consider, Kevin, is finding an alternate route to Chicago, then picking up Amtrak there to go west. One possibility might be to drive to the South Bend airport, parking your car there (in normal airport parking so it should be secure), then take the South Shore into Chicago. If the trains from your nearest Amtrak stop into Chicago are usually full, that may be why tickets are priced so high. Maybe not, but it's worth checking into!

Thanks, Joe, for the insight...sounds like you procure the furniture in a very thorough way and that is key....you have to be willing, literally, to go the extra mile if you want authentic Amish furniture!

Questionable...I generally agree with you...although to find out more about the Amish and photography see my entry here http://www.oasisnewsfeatures.com/amish-101/
There are some Amish that will allow the type of shots seen in this ad, but it is questionable...
