Amish Cake, Anyone?

I found this recipe in the archives of the Amish Cook today. This was a recipe from Elizabeth Coblentz, the original Amish Cook.  Not sure why it is called “Amish Cake” and not “Catholic Cake” or “Methodist Cake” (SIGH, joking, someone always misinterprets)…If you look at the ingredient list this looks like a very basic cake that most any Amish homemaker would have the ingredients on hand…so that is why they call it that…Anyway, here is the recipe for “Amish Cake.”  I’d add some frosting to it, so go to it and enjoy! Let me know how it turns out!

1/2 cup shortening
2 tsp cinnamon
1 3/4 cups brown sugar
1 tsp crushed cloves
3 eggs, separated
1 tsp allspice
1 cup sour cream
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla

Mix sugar and shortening until creamy. Add the egg yolks to creamy mixture. Mix in the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, allspice and salt. Add the sour cream and beat well. Add the vanilla and fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites. Bake in a greased 8-inch layer pan for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
