ABOUT THE AMISH COOK?

I’m sure you’re saying right about now “you don’t look like the Amish Cook!”    Well, you’re right: I’m not the Amish Cook. My name is Kevin Williams and I am the creator and editor of the syndicated Amish Cook column.  The column itself is penned by Old Order Amish mother of 8, Lovina Eicher.  But true to her beliefs and lifestyle, you won’t find Lovina online.

I am also an author and speaker about anything relating to the Plain people. I’ve explored Amish settlements from Maine to Montana, from Texas to Florida (often dragging my lovely wife, Rachel, along. Many of her excellent photos appear on this site).  I’ve also spent time with German Baptists and Mennonites (still wanting to visit a Hutterite colony, that’s on my bucket list).  So if you are searching for information about the plain people, you’ve come to the right place.  Of course as editor of the Amish Cook column, this site does have an emphasis on food, so there are plenty of tasty recipes to be found.

Thank you for stopping by and if you have any questions or comments for me, feel free to contact me at kwilliams@oasisnewsfeatures.com

Kevin, one more comment about the layout of the new site, I really like the recipe corner broke down in different catagories. So much easier to find.
    Thanks again!

I have just now stumbled onto this site and I must say I am very impressed. I love the format and style of you writing, I am retiring to TN in a few years and have an Amish community near our home there, This will help to educate my husband and myself. We are anxious to make acquaintances for a life time there. Thank you for all that you do!! Respectfully, Diane Taylor

Kevin, loved the old site but really like the new format. I’m not Amish but find everything about them so interesting. I really started reading the newspaper column but found your site and prefer reading it here as well as the other offerings of your site. I live in Hanover, PA so I do occasionally interact with a number of mostly Mennonite. We are not far from Lancaster and there are Amish that I have dealt with through the markets and bakeries. I am somewhat a foodie and LOVE the recipes. Keep it up and never stop! I am and will be a long-time follower. Thanks for what you do and share with us. Again, LOVE the new site!

Thank you so much, Howard, that truly means a ton…hope to see you here a lot!:) (The column by the way, used to appear in the Gettysburg Sun and the Westminster, Maryland paper, so we used to be in your area, but glad you found us online!)

    Kevin,
I like your web site about the Amish. I live in an area not far from them and have come to admire their devotion to God!
I do wish, however, that they would all be permitted to have a phone in their sheds! I was sad to read that the Amish are frequently robbed and even killed because their attackers know they have no phones! Perhaps in this age a stationary phone is a “necessity?” It’s sad to think anyone would want to harm such good people!

      Ric,
Welcome!! Thanks for stopping by. What Amish settlement are you by? And, yes, that is one of the reasons so many Amish have made a concession to at least having phone access in an outbuilding: for security and safety. There are people who will prey upon the vulnerable Amish and that is sad! – Kevin

    Hi Kevin,

So glad to find this website! I picked up both “The Amish Cook’s Baking Book” and “The Amish Cook at Home” at my local library because my son has a second grade social studies assignment on cultures and we picked The Amish. Mainly because I grew up outside Goshen, Indiana, and am very familiar with the culture, and now we live outside Atlanta, Georgia, where most people haven’t experienced interactions with the Amish. As I was reading both books, I came across mentions of the column, “The Amish Cook” and it’s origins and remembered several clippings from it in my mother’s things. (She passed away in May 2011.) It seems that several recipes in both books were eaten in my home too as a child, as many relations on my mother’s side are Mennonite. (I had forgotten all about Dilly Bread and how good it is!) My son and I had fun going through the books reading the recipes (he’s only 7, but already a foodie) and we made Lovina’s “Mystery Biscuits” for dinner tonight.

Anyway, short story long, I have bookmarked this site and will check often for recipes and links. Thanks for providing the world a link to visit with such a wonderful, warm, generous people.

    Sincerely,
    Peggi Fellows

After some digging, I was able to come across your site. My sister-in-law use to cut out the recipes from the Lawrenceville Illinois newspaper. I always enjoyed when she would share them with me. She passed a while back and I was wishing for some way to keep the recipes coming……….I found you! Thanks for what you do and thanks to Mrs. Eicher for the cherished recipes!

I love this site and the receipes.
My husband prefers basic cooking and this site just suits his fancy.
What happened to all the receipes in the old site. I am especially interested in the canned cherry pie filling receipes (as well as all the others)

Welcome! Thanks for stopping by! And if I had to guess you live near Tiffin, Ohio? I’m trying to think which papers run The Amish Cook on Sundays and Tiffin is the one that comes to mind…thanks for reading the column!

Kevin, I stumbled upon your website, so glad I did. I was reading the online version from the traverse City paper & then they stopped it. I too have both The Amish Cook at home & The amish Cook’s Baking book plus the 20th anniversary book. Love each & every one of them. I did notice however that Lovina doesn’t have a recipe for Freindship bread. Does she make that or have a recipe for it? I would love to share the one I have from another Amish cookbook I have if she would like it. Please tell her how much I enjoy the books & of course the recipes. Keep up the good work.
    Theresa

Theresa, thank you for the kind comments…you can read the column here!:) I post it each Monday afternoon. Good idea about posting the friendship bread recipe, Lovina does have one and I’ll post it in the next day or so and you can see how your recipe compares to hers.
